MIT Class of 2023 Discussion/Decisions

I’ve heard that MIT defers much more than they reject early round. So getting deferred gives you no measure of how you stand in the AO’s eyes. Every person from my school who applied early and then got deferred, ended up getting rejected. Applying early to MIT doesn’t put as much weight on your application as would applying early to, let’s say, UChicago.

The numbers are published; you can figure out the probability. My guess is 3% chance, but I didn’t look at the data closely.

@brassratter Can you post a link to these published numbers?

a google search of “MIT admissions statistics” leads you to this post on the MIT admissions website:

https://mitadmissions.org/apply/process/stats/

~6000 deferred, and about 250 of those ultimately admitted.

Thank you! So I guess 248 our of the total regular applicant pool (12135) is an acceptance rate of about 2% for deferred applicants admitted in the regular decision round…if that answers your question @paranoidmom101

@LincolnsGF, thank you so much!

ECs got an email confirming that admissions will be released Pi day, Tau time. 21,000 applicants; about a 7% admit rate overall.

@HPuck35 So the rate has dropped by a %, or has it stayed the same? I dont seem to recall the admit rate for MIT class of 2022

@TheGuy1 Last year, the general admit rate was 6.7%. But just within the regular applicant pool, it was about 4.4% (800/18385).

@LincolnsGF

Okay, so if the average admit rate has risen, we can expect the RD rate to have risen proportionally.

Right?

Im almost certain.

@HPuck35 I know this is a rather stupid question, but hey I’m curious and newly exposed to cc lingo. What does “EC” stand for? It doesn’t seem to be “extra curricular” from the context, haha.

@LincolnsGF EC=Educational Counselor (the people/alums taking the interviews (if possible) for apps)

EC is an MIT specific term and stands for “Educational Counselor”. ECs are alumni volunteers who conduct interviews for MIT applicants.

@HPuck35

If EC’s get to know which of their interviewed apps got in, what about the apps who didnt get an interview?

No one else would be knowing if they got in other than the app and the adcom right?

Ik this question seems weird, and it didnt make any sense when i first heard it, but my friend from WI who didnt get an interview is too reluctant to make a CC account, hence im asking this right here.

That’s a good assumption. Nobody except admissions would know whether your friend were accepted or rejected.

@brassratter

So youre reinforcing my statement right?

Yes.

@brassratter alright cool! THanks.

As far as the advantage/disadvantage to applying early–I asked explicitly if there was any advantage to applying early or not at a “meet MIT” event and they said there was none at all. They also say this on the admissions web page. Good luck everyone!!!

I am going to give you guys a tip: don’t check application status from now to the afternoon/evening of the pie day. Didn’t your parents tell you that should not stay late on Christmas eve? If you keep watching the fireplace Santa would not come out of the chimney to give you a toy? Like Santa, MIT drones carrying acceptance letter are shy of human beings. Do something else otherwise to avoid bad omens. I believe in superstition.
