MIT Conference Prank

Story: <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/science/04/14/mit.prank.reut/index.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/science/04/14/mit.prank.reut/index.html</a></p>

Lest you think Caltech has a monopoly on pranks, a couple of MIT grad students "wrote a computer program to generate research papers complete with 'context-free grammar,' charts and diagrams."

The World Multi-Conference on Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics (WMSCI) actually accepted one of the papers -- "Rooter: A Methodology for the Typical Unification of Access Points and Redundancy". :)

I was just going to post the Yahoo News link

<a href="http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=573&e=8&u=/nm/odd_gibberish_dc%5B/url%5D">http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=573&e=8&u=/nm/odd_gibberish_dc</a>

to a story about the same incident. That's a very cool MIT hack--good job.

Here's a link to their website:
<a href="http://www.pdos.lcs.mit.edu/scigen/%5B/url%5D">http://www.pdos.lcs.mit.edu/scigen/</a></p>

Wow. That pwns Caltech. of course, what can you expect from "THE ONLY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY"

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I feel it was really loserish for caltech to plan a hack during MIT CPW. they say we have a 'rivalry' on who can have the best hacks, but... uhhh... nobody here ever thinks "lets make a better hack than that one caltech did." obviously this little 'rivalry' is one-sided. they just WANT there to be a 'rivalry' so they can think they are in our league.

Jesus Christ, that's a disgusting attitude to have.

Not "in our league"?! They're pranks for God's sake, and I'm nothing but thankful for an inter-college rivalry that is comparing something other than the degree of Ivy League snobbery.

Man, we sound like Harvard: "We're simply ABOVE your silly rivalries, Yale [Caltech]." Superiority complexes are what drove me AWAY from schools like that; I certainly hope MIT isn't stepping in that direction.

Why shouldn't MIT prefrosh enjoy some entertainment at Caltech students' expense?

lol pebbles, I think you are overreacting just a little bit. ;)

However I do agree, that even though there may not have been a rivalry in the past, a new one seems like it will make things interesting to say the least.

the caltech hackers came all the way to mit to try to get a little attention during OUR cpw, and they weren't even successful at gaining that. most people didn't even know they were here, and the prefrosh that DID know, weren't impressed.

the people i know who went to caltech are the people who didn't get into mit, stanford or berkeley. why? they had no extracurriculars. not to say that everyone at caltech is like that, because i am sure there are plenty of well-rounded people there. but the ones who have better things to do than travel across the country to try to play a silly trick on our prefrosh and then say "Ooh, now we have a rivalry with MIT! We are cool!" are not the losers to which i am referring to.

i wasn't talking about the actual pranks being not "in our league." i couldn't care less about pranks, but if people want to get involved in that kinda stuff that's fine too.

beavercall,

i'm sure it was all meant in good intentions... I'm a prefrosh who was at CPW and I thought it was kind of entertaining... Almost exciting that we were "under attack" and East Campus was "patrolling".

Besides, if Caltech wants to hack MIT, what better time to do it than CPW?

As long as we can all be calm about it, I'll bore you all with my opinion...

In a way, I loved the rivalry that was going on, because I'd already decided to go to MIT, so it was my first "MIT Pride" experience. =) I only got a little annoyed when one of the hackers started talking to my friends and I, encouraging us to come to Caltech. That seemed kind of "loserish" for lack of a better word. I could have read it wrong, but it sort of came off as "see how we hacked MIT? Yeah, cuz we're cooler. So come to our school instead." That's how I interpreted it anyway- but other than that 1 minute conversation, I really liked seeing the rivalray going on.

That said, I did not find the hacks particularly impressive. I didn't even know they were there until the last day. Some of the ideas were brilliant, but I really don't think it had the effect they were probably going for...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA EXACTLY! Congrats on deciding to matriculate to MIT Laura, you're going to love it here... hopefully. I do... most of the time ;)

Well, I personally prefer MIT. But CalTech is ranked first in the nation for both Bio and Chem major.

It depends on what ur major is.

p.s. sorry i didn't post this on my earlier post

yeah, the pranks put me a little off of caltech.

Overreact? Me?

never. :P
