I am currently a freshman at MIT. Last year, I applied early, was deferred, and then was ultimately accepted RD. Many, many people I've come to know here were also deferred and then admitted, so don't lose hope! (But do send in supplemental materials if you feel that will strengthen your case.)

My question is this: Does MIT read every early application that it receives?

Last year, MIT deferred every early applicant from my high school. Our counselors called admissions and were informed that MIT had not looked at any of the early applicants from our school, and had deferred us all by default. Apparently, the same thing happened two years ago, as well. (Though before that, students had been admitted early.)

Our school has quite a bit of clout and regularly sends a handful of seniors to MIT each year. It is for this reason that I imagine our counselors were able to get so candid an explanation out of MIT--others schools might not be able to achieve this, leaving their deferred EA applicants in the dark, free to imagine that they simply did not have what it takes.

Does MIT still do this? Does it have a list of schools from which it accepts students early--or does it simply have a list of schools from which it will not consider early applicants (seems more feasible)?

No such list, I'm betting big money. Two readers for every application, I'm betting big money. No school's applicants are deferred "by default", I'm betting big money.

Given the need to staff the phones for call-ins today, it's highly unlikely BenJ will be able to respond to this, but I'm sure you'll get an answer from him as soon as he's able. I'd expect it to be a more polite version of what I expect my 16-year-old would say: "What were your counselors smoking?!"

Whoah - that is simply not true. KentuckyFriedBeef, if you would be willing to contact me offline (either via email or in person @ 3-107), I would love to speak with your counselors and find out how this misunderstanding happened.

I have no contact with MIT, but the idea that any college would automatically defer everyone "by default" just defies logic. There is absolutley no reason for a college to do so.

KFB: was this just parking lot rumor, or did you GC tell this 'fact' to you personally?

what seems more likely to me is that the high school failed to get its part in to MIT in time and the entire school's apps were automatically deferred because they were incomplete. Your GC might have been trying to pass the buck for their own error.

oh well, Ben said he wont be here again until Jan, but well, Ankur, I will say that you could take the TOEFL and that way MIT will only evaluate your SAT II's and the TOEFL and you have Excellent SAT II scores. ALso remember that admission for International Students is specially difficult so you should aim for the best scores always and make a GREAT application!
