Anyone know the MIT dorm regulations or prohibited items? Would a medium-sized model rocket be prohibited? (Of course nothing would be launched on/near campus).

From MIT’s undergrad housing website FAQ’s (http://web.mit.edu/housing/undergrad/freshman-faqs.html):

“What is not allowed in the room?
Microwave or hot plates
Candles or Incense
Open heating elements
Illegal Drugs
Weapons - Guns, Knives”

What do you want a model rocket for? The issue would be with the motor, not with the rocket itself. I doubt that anyone would have an issue with you just having a rocket sitting on your desk, but if you’re improperly storing the motors and they might be a fire hazard, people will probably be worried.

I’m sure there is stuff left of this list that is prohibited. You have to use some judgement.

For instance, they probably don’t want you to store a giant chunk of sodium in your closet.

I wonder if toasters/toaster ovens are allowed. Most likely not.

Toasters / microwaves aren’t allowed in your room, but they are allowed in public spaces. So putting a toaster in the kitchen with your name on it and telling everyone else to not use it would make you a jerk, but would be legit under MIT housing policies.

The words “MIT” and “regulations/rules” don’t necessarily belong in the same sentence. The general guideline is that you can do what you want, as long as you don’t hurt yourself or others. Even things that are technically prohibited in the dorms are widely used, with common sense, and by hiding them during the once-a-year room inspection; e.g., I would not have survived college without my illegal space heater.

My husband the rocket scientist says that he does not think a “medium-sized” model rocket would be prohibited from being launched on campus, although he can be more specific if you’re more specific.

When the dorm allows “fish”, do hermit crabs fall into this “fish” category?

what rules?

-lover of candles

I have two pet frogs, Xenopus laevis, and they happily live underwater, just like fish but a little bigger. Could I keep them in my dorm room? =)

I’d ask around your hall when you get a final rooming assignment. There’s a difference between technicalities and whether people will actually care. (My guess is that no one will mind a hermit crab or a contained frog.)

I knew a girl with a couple of ferrets. Ferrets are illegal, but no one cared.

^Aren’t those smelly?

Also, I’m curious about cat dorms. Are cats allowed to wander into non-cat halls? I really like some of the cat dorms (from what I’ve read), but I’m allergic. I don’t mind cats, but if there’s too much dander floating around I start sneezing. It’s very irritating.

Well, it was Senior House. They have smellier things than that there.

Nope, cats are not allowed in non-cat halls. In EC, it’d be difficult for a cat to get from one place to another with no one noticing ^.^

My best friend had a turtle in an aquarium, and nobody cared. I don’t even think she had to hide it for inspections. I think “fish” encompasses pretty much anything that lives in an aquarium, in practice.
