MIT EA applicants -- Class of 2025

Thank you for your reply. I wonder, by the way, that if you don’t actually “apply” then what the athletic recruitment form in MIT application is for?

Sherimba, if you don’t mind me asking, what sport?

Football.

That’s funny, I don’t recall my son mentioning an athletic recruitment form on the application. I have no idea!

The Athletic Recruitment form just puts you on their mailing list, you aren’t actually “applying.” Once on their mailing list, you’ll receive invites to prospect camps and may also get emails regarding their recruiting schedule and which events they’re planning to attend for your sport.

How, then, international students are recruited? Thank you for your replies, by the way!

Same way as domestic applicants. Obviously, football tends to be only US applicants, but MIT has numerous sports that are played globally.

peteyMIT being very active on reddit, based on his responses, decisions will definitely not be out til at least the 18th (probably later than that)

Do MIT and Caltech differ in the pull coaches have? Asking because my son was rejected from Caltech today, and the coach there was so invested in him that he even reviewed his application and made suggestions before it was submitted. MIT coach also said they supported my son’s application and would write a letter of recommendation to admissions. Feeling anxious in light of Caltech’s rejection despite strong coach support and because my son turned down several ED athletic slots/guaranteed acceptances at really good schools for his lottery chance at MIT… Academically, he falls well above the 75% threshold on all of MIT’s quantitative measures. For what it’s worth, I never thought Caltech was the right fit for my son, but he applied at the last minute at the coach’s behest - otherwise, he was not interested in Caltech.

Really hoping MIT works out for him, but I know the chances are slim (and getting slimmer by the day with the apparent unprecedented increase in apps!). Good luck and happy holidays to all - I do believe it all works out in the end as it should (at least, that’s what I keep telling myself while I wait!!).

@mamese Many of us are feeling worried and anxious with recent rejections but I am not sure it is possible for anyone to fall well above MITs 75% quantitative measures? If he does, I would be interested to know what those scores are…

I hope your son does well in the applications he has left!!

Mamese, if you don’t mind my asking, what sport is your son being recruited for?

Mamase, my understand is that at CalTech and MIT athlete admission differ as follows. At MIT, the coach suggests to admissions that he/she needs X number of athletes in this class and earmarks the applications of the recruits he is interested in. Admissions makes the final decision out of all of the earmarked apps. So if soccer needs 6 recruits and they get 24 qualified apps, the recruited athlete has a 25% chance.

At CalTech, the sport is considered as an extracurricular and probably helps the applicant a bit, but that athlete is evaluated with the overall applicant pool.

Can I ask where you got that info?

This is what I put together from discussions with a number of other athlete parents throughout the years.
