Do I have a chance at MIT?
GPA- roughly 3.8 unweighted, will go down this year unfortunately (I am currently a junior)
14 APs completed, currently 6 5’s, 1 4, and 1 3, looking at 4 5’s and 2 4’s this year most likely.
5 year AIME qualifier
qualified for USAJMO sophomore year, didn’t qualify for USAMO junior year
admitted to USAPHO camp
2260 on SAT 1
(I have yet to do Math2 or Physics SAT subject tests, but looking for 800s on both)
Played tennis till back injury
Science Olympiad participant
60 hours volunteer work + summer volunteer work camp in China
Chances seem slim. Do really well on your essay, get those 800s and hope for the best but don’t expect too much. You’re a competitive candidate, but so is everyone else who applies to MIT.
You have done a fantastic job qualifying for those USAMO’s and AP’s, but it looks like you are a typical (I’m assuming Asian).
Maybe try to add some creativity in your essay and prove you are a special and unique student. Also, try to prove why you slacked a little on your GPA in your essay.
Make sure you truly love everything you do. I think MIT really looks for personality. But at the same time, acceptance/rejection from these top schools have nothing to do with your worth. You’re amazing and show that off!
I believe that your stats are strong. Qualifying for USAPHO and USAJMO is VERY impressive. My brother as well as three of my close friends got into MIT. They weren’t nearly as qualified as you are. CC can be really critical and unrealistic. Admissions in reality isn’t as cutthroat as they make it here. Believe in yourself and really advertise yourself in your essays!
