MIT Essay too long : "cultural background and identity"?

Hey guys!

My essay for the prompt “Please tell us more about your cultural background and identity” has already been cut down to ~250 words, and cutting it down to the 100 word limit would make it a pretty bad essay tbh.

I know that it says “If you need more than 100 words, please use the Optional section on Part 2.”, but how should I go about this? In the original space, should I write "please refer to Part 2:Optional section " ? Should I write the first 100 words there, and then continue the rest in Part 2 (kinda seems stupid)?

And also, is 250 words too much?

I’m just an applicant, but I predict an answer from @MITChris would be something along the lines off “Whatever you like. There is no preference.”

Part of the challenge you have been given by this essay is to write it within the word limit.
