What sort of essays are on the MIT app? Samples from prior years would be much appreciated.

on the application for entrance in fall 2007: there was a short essay about what you like to do purely for fun, a short essay about what majors you might be considering, and you had two options for the main essay: either describe a time when you experienced failure and explain what you learned from it, or describe how your environment (family, school, clubs, community, etc) influenced who you are. then there was an optional space at the end where you could write about basically anything additional you wanted the admissions committee to know about.

bumper cars.

theres an optional essay in the end about something you have created. i found it pretty useful

Here were the essay prompts when I applied (3 years ago):

Tell us about something you do just for the fun of it.
Tell us what field you're interested in and why.
Choose one of:
a) Describe a time you failed or encountered setbacks and how you dealt with it.
b) Describe how the world you live in has influenced you.
Optional (write none, one, or both):
a) Tell us about something you created
b) Write anything else you think we need to know

Aside from some changes in the exact wording, those have been the essay prompts for the past 3 years, so I'd be surprised if this year's were suddenly very different.
