S24 will be applying to MIT so I am going to start this thread now. I don’t think the application is open yet but hopefully soon.
Good luck!
DS2022 is a sophomore, accepted on Pi Day, after EA deferral.
Was the best Pi Day ever!
I can only imagine how amazing pi day was! S24 is still debating about whether to apply to MIT early or Caltech since he can’t do both. At least for MIT it doesn’t seem to matter much.
S24 is not sure he should apply to MIT for Econ/Finance. SAT 1560 (770/790), 4.0/4.4 at a very competitive public school, likely NMSF. Good rigor for senior year (AP Calc BC, AP Physics C, AP Econ - Micro & Macro, AP Lit, Spanish H plus some required classes like Health etc.). The issue is that he got a 4 in AP Physics 1. I sense that this 4 will be be an issue even though he will be applying for Econ/Finance. Thoughts ?
I suspect that not every single accepted applicant had straight 5’s. I highly doubt that will be the reason he doesn’t get in.
Unless he knows that he wants Caltech more, applying EA to MIT allows him to apply EA to other colleges also.
He wants MIT more but he also likes Caltech and it seems to help a bit to apply there early. This has been his dilemma because his other EA schools are all public and therefore he can still apply to those. At the moment he is working on about 6-7 applications at the same time so waiting to see the final outcome. In his head he is thinking that he really wants to know quickly about MIT but I don’t think he is processing how a rejection or deferral will feel but rather, he is imagining the acceptance!
The difficult part is that MIT defers soooo many students (66% last year) to then be rejected on Pi Day. So applying EA to MIT is just waiting to be rejected in March.
The other difficult part is warding off Senioritis, because MIT/colleges expect 1st semester grades if you’re deferred/apply RD (which is hard when you’re so burnt out from all the APs, ECs, sports/jobs, application essays, etc).
Thanks, this is our first time as parents so I really have/had no idea and MIT was never on the horizon until recently when someone suggested he apply there (he is interested in quantative finance type of stuff, whatever little he knows of it and of course this can all change while in college !)
It looks like MIT Admission website didn’t update essay prompts for 2023-24. Is it assumed that they are not changing? DS is getting ready with as many essays before school work rush starts. We are catching up as most of the summer is gone in a competitive summer research program.
I appreciate any insights here.
You should make no such assumption.
MIT changed one prompt ever-so-slightly last year, but that slight change made it effectively a different question. Lots of applicants therefore didn’t answer the prompt because they used the prior year’s. Wait.
Thank you very much. We will wait
It sounds like they will be opening up their application at the end of August.
MIT doesn’t admit to majors, so there is no such thing as “applying to Econ/Finance”.
And the harsh reality is that near-perfect stats are table stakes, and he will be competing with kids who took AP Calc BC their sophomore year.
What is probably going to be more important than his 4 in AP Physics 1 (which, for whatever it’s worth, puts him into the 92nd percentile, among top 35,000 test-takers of this particular test last year) or his average (for MIТ) Math SAT are the parts of his application that will distinguish him from other 16,000 NMSFs.
MIT doesn’t care when S24 took Calc BC or even if he took it. What they care about is “did you consistently take the most challenging courses available to you each term”.
You are spot on that near perfection is table stakes and differentiating from the rest of the herd is the real challenge.
aGREE, 790 Math is the middle 50%, thanks for sharing the consolidated AP test data.
Did anyone else’s kid apply for MIT WISE? S24 just submitted the application. The acceptance rate is low for this but would be awesome if it it works out since he would love to get an in depth look at the school. We are on the west coast so he really doesn’t have a great feel for the area although when we visited Boston a few years ago he loved it!
A few days ago their application page status changed to:
The transfer application is now available. The first-year application for fall 2024 will be available in the next few weeks.
Makes me wonder what they are up to that makes them push it so far back. If my memory serves, they used to open it mid-August.
I hope they aren’t changing their essay prompts too much to deal with the recent SCOTUS decision-related admissions landscape changes.
Harvаrd just replaced their essay with five short-answer prompts - but MIT has always had several short-answer prompts. My guess is they might be adding one more and/or perhaps rephrasing the two that currently get at the diversity question (“your world” and “people different from you”).
MIT Application is now open with minimal changes to essay prompts: removal of “Just for fun” and slight rewording (and simplification) of the remaining ones. Most essays written over the summer should still fit.
Good luck, everyone!
