MIT FAQ for application year 2008-2009

When MIT says that in international applications they expect to see leadership or research stuff, do they really mean it?
Ummmm.... Where do they say that? I'm an international EC, and I have seen quite a few applicants over the years. From all that I have seen, the admissions criteria for internationals are no different than they are for domestic students, there are simply more of them competing for the same few spots, but what MIT is looking for is identical.

Indeed, I have seen many students admitted without these things, and some admitted with them.

I remember reading it on the admissions blogs. I'll find the link a bit later.
Btw what's EC?

Education counselor aka interviewer.
And the link says some kind of recognition or achievement, not necessarily what you mentioned.

Hmm. Mikalye, could you summarise what MIT actually looks for in an applicant? Besides dedication, passion, initiative, and academic achievement. There's got to be something else because I know people who have all that but have been rejected.

MIT Admissions: The Match Between You And MIT

This will answer your question.

O_o It does. Dunno how I missed that link.

confusion

My essay had half of it in italics and formatting is kinda important because there is a constant time-shift and I had used the italics to distinguish the past from the present. Trouble is, MIT didn't support the italics so what I did was indent the para containing the past events more than that of the present events. But I still doubt that it is enough to give the adcoms a clear view of the essay. Do you think I should fax the original formatted copy of the essay to the office?

I would. It doesn't hurt. And if it improves your essay...
Mail, don't fax. There is still plenty of time for your essay to get to the admissions office, and several of Matt's blog entries specifically ask that the fax machine be used for last-minute required material only.

Videos for additional material

1.How long can videos be? (25 minutes? Its a small lecture...)
2.If its sent by mail, do the adcoms watch it ?? (comon..now how would they play a video tape?)
3.Is there any other way we can send a lecture? (email, post-mail) that makes it easy for the adcoms to view it??

thanks for helping out guys!

anyone who has sent video-tapes before pls comment too !!

@Mollie: Err ... mail is really costly and I've already mailed the school documents. Drat! What do I do?

^I think then the best option would be to email a PDF copy formatted correctly.

Can you send it on a DVD? Most of the readers will have access to a computer while reading, though they don't always have access to the internet.

Should I title or put the prompt on the essays I mail in? Like "optional essay, tell us about something you created..."

And when would it be a good time to send it? I know if i mail it at the end of January my app probably would have been read a couple of times already right?

thanks mollie, I've been bugging you a lot lately, but its almost over! XD

Thnks Mollie..!

yes DVD is possible, so that's by mail then...
any other internet options (?) ...(maybe mail is better since they dont always have access to internet)

Whom would I mail it to? admissions at mit dot edu?

Your choice, but it's probably a good idea to let them know what you're sending them.

Now would be a good time, and if not now, as soon as possible. They'll start reading applications in the order they're complete, so reading could start for your application next week, or it could start at the beginning of February. Since you don't know which, it's best to get your supplemental material in as soon as possible.

You could upload it to a website and send the URL, but the admissions officers can't guarantee that they'll be able to look at the website. I imagine the file is too big to email.
Yup.

Can grades alone make or break an application? Just a general question.

Make? No.
Break? Yes, certainly.
