MIT FAQ for application year 2009-2010

It depends on the interviewer and the time of year.

Mikalye has said (here and elsewhere) that it takes him several hours to write up his report and submit it to MIT, so it can take some time. If your EC is interviewing several other candidates for EA, or if your EC is busy with other things, it may take about a month.

Mollie, could you please reply to http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1063360907-post194.html</a>. Thanks

I haven’t responded because I’m not sure – I’m not the best source for highly technical questions about the application, because I applied myself eight years ago.

It seems to me that it would be reasonable to write both weighted and unweighted GPA for the question. Ultimately, it is likely up to your discretion.

Do you know who to contact for questions like that? I did not find an MIT e-mail for application questions.

There is an email address listed at the bottom of the admissions webpage, at the same spot where the mailing address is listed.

However, for questions like this which are relatively minor, you are probably best off just using your own good judgment about what to write on the application.

Mollie,
I have two questions.

For this essay prompt: “Although you may not yet know what you want to major in, which department or program at MIT appeals to you and why? (*) (100 words or fewer)” Do I have to stick to why the department/major I want to go into appeals to me or can I also mention MIT-specific things like the Media Lab that really interest me? I’m asking because I realized I haven’t written much about “why MIT” in my other essays, and that’s pretty important. I already have a full essay planned for the optional space, so I can’t talk about it there.

I want to send in a dance supplement, but there are only instructions for art, music, and architecture on the website. Do I have to make a DVD and mail it in, or can I email admissions with a video attachment like how the music supplements are done?

@log - for your first question, I’m not Mollie but I’m 99% positive that you can go ahead and talk about MIT-specific things there, in fact it’ll probably be great if you can. The only danger is running into issues with the word limit.

@log - Actually, I think that’s the perfect place to write something more along the lines of “why MIT”.

I will talk with somebody in admissions about a dance supplement – my suspicion is that they’d be happy to have the dance faculty evaluate it, but I don’t know the answer off the top of my head.

I’m out of town at a conference at the moment – could you send me a PM if I haven’t posted anything else by Friday?

Not sure if this has been asked before, but for the MIT application, can teachers send in their evaluations online? Or do they have to be mailed?

Thanks :)

The evaluations should be submitted on paper – the address is at the bottom of the admissions webpage.

I did not respond earlier, because I thought that Mollie’s remark about the relative unimportance of test scores was spot on, but I thought I would expand slightly. It has been a couple of years since I looked at it, but the SAT2 math tests were always a choice between a harder test on easier math (Math I) or an easier test on harder math (Math II). Which is yet another reason why Math II is not preferred.

hi, not sure if this has been asked before:

do early action applicants have to send in any senior year grades by nov 1, or do they simply send in first semester (mid year) grades in february?

also, how much of a factor would these grades be?

1) I believe I’ve read this before but I want to confirm - the 10% rule for word count is fine, right? Like for the 100 word essays anything between 90-110 words is good?

2) For the additional materials section, would it be a good idea to submit a longer version of one of my original essays? I wrote an essay that’s 500 words but had to cut it down for the 250 word limit. It’s just that the project I’m writing on is difficult to explain in just 250 words, and I think the 500 word essay does it much more justice. I just don’t want to be redundant.

EA admits and EA deferred students will send first semester grades using the mid-year report in January.

Just don’t forget that it’s my rule for word count, and hasn’t been explicitly approved by anybody official. :)

Hi, I had a couple questions regarding supplements.

My first question is about the space for a URL on Section 9 of Part II. Above the blank it reads "Inventions/Robots/Etc.: If you have blogs, videos, websites or pictures about things you have built or created including robots, inventions, etc., please share the url with us below: " I have a youtube account where I have a video of a marble sorter made for a Principles of Engineering class at my highschool. Also on this account I have a few film projects that I have made for fun and other school assignments (which I reference in my creativity essay). I am wondering if giving the url of my youtube account would be appropriate for this. To my mind, it would provide an illustration to go along with my essays. However, I am unsure if Officers would find this irrelevant or even immature.

My second question is about the newly expanded section for additional information. I am still uncertain of what exactly should go here and if it really will add all that much to my application. I’m thinking that I could write with a little bit more detail with how I spend my free time with friends (writing forty words about one of my hobbies in the application just didn’t seem like enough), but once again, I don’t want to be redundant or immature.

Any reply is appreciated. Thanks.

EDIT: If you would like to see my youtube account, please private message me. I think that posting it on this forum would be inappropriate.

I think if your YouTube account is fairly professional (ie, your username isn’t hotchick4evar and you don’t have videos of parties and you flipping people off), it’s appropriate to point them to the videos of your projects.

Just one opinion.

I also think these videos sound fun (and exactly like the sort of thing they’d like to see). Moreover, you sound like you have good sense, so I think it would be fair to trust your intuition.

Thank you for the feedback. Now I will definitely be including my youtube account in my application!

Does MIT call high schools for interim grades prior to making the decisions on EA apps? Also, can the student send in a science project report as supplement? If yes, should the report be sent to admissions or the relevant academic department?
