MIT FAQ for application year 2009-2010

This is particularly true internationally. There are a wide variety of courses and options. For example the Nigerian Physics syllabus is different from the American. They go further into circuits and systems than is needed for the SAT2, but do less general and special relativity. As a result, they need some significant additional prep to do the SAT2, but the bulk of the SAT2 is identical. And that is the point, around the globe, the SAT2 roughly, but only roughly, covers the secondary school syllabus.

Whereas once you go above that, it gets very much more different. A Levels are very, very different than AP courses, and usually significantly more rigourous. In the US, the progression from the SAT2 material is to AP-Calculus, rather than to Linear Algebra, Probability, or Combinatorics, but again that is not necessarily a given. It is simply not true to say that there is an globally obvious given level above the SAT2.

The same thing is happening to me, and I mailed my everything at least a month ago. Should I get Evaluation B to get sent again?

No.

From Matt’s blog [here](http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/deadlines/wheres_my_stuff_1.shtml):

Someone at MIT will post a “we’ve gone through all the mail” entry when they’ve gone through all the mail, which won’t be until some point in early January. At that point, if your application materials aren’t there, you will be given the fax number and allowed to fax the materials in.

Just a question regarding the transcript.

I have changed schools during freshman year. My counselor at my current school just told me that she’ll make a photo copy of the REPORT CARD for my freshman year and add it as a separate document to my current high school’s transcript. My counselor said she’ll also write a note or w.e. to confirm that the photocopy is legit and unaltered.

I’m wondering if this is OK because MIT (and the schools on CommonApp) requires an official transcript from all secondary schools, while I’m just sending a photocopy of the report card.

I hope I made sense and someone can help me with this soon :)

Some schools I’m applying to require college transcripts for the college classes I have taken. I looked at the “How to Apply” page, and I skimmed the application, but I found no mention of college transcripts. Am I supposed to send one? Also, how can I find this information; I still have some other applications to submit.

TheDude, I imagine this will be fine. If there’s a problem, MIT will contact your GC, but as long as she notes that this is the official copy they happen to have, I’m sure it will work.

ipopova, if the course grades are not listed on your high school transcript, you should send a college transcript. If they are listed on your high school transcript, there’s no need to bother.

Last year’s grades are on my transcript, but this year’s grades have not been processed yet, and I have already sent my high school transcript. I was going to send my college transcript so far and then send the new one, but I shall now only send the new one. Thank you for saving my parents $15. :)

quick question: I’m seeing like A LOT of applicants with 780+ on SAT2 Science tests. I only took 'em once and got a lowly 650, because the some themes covered on the test (which included a lot of electricity problems) have not been covered in our course at school. How could this affect me negatively? (other than being my only score under 700?)

@fercasillasPR: MIT evaluates applications holistically. A lower test score here or there won’t really hurt your app.

MIT only considers one SAT 2 science test and one SAT 2 math test. They will evaluated your highest score in either category.

If you have only taken the one SAT 2 science test, it might be in your best interest to take another (or retake the same) in January.l

I have a question for molliebatmit
I have applied EA for the upcoming year, but I am worried that I will get deferred.
I was identified as gifted, and placed in a program from grades 5-8 for this, meaning I qualify to join mensa. i mentioned being in a gifted program on my application, but not exactly what that meant. would joining mensa help me to get into mit?

If Mensa were already a major part of your life, it would be useful to put on your MIT application. But it wouldn’t be useful to join Mensa, or to mention that you’re eligible, without involvement in the society.

Mensa membership isn’t a particularly high bar in MIT’s applicant pool. The 98th percentile for the SAT is about a 2200.

From what I’ve gathered, Mensa is not taken seriously by anyone in the scientific community.

“The 98th percentile for the SAT is about a 2200.”
Or a composite score of 32 on the ACT.

thanks for this, i honestly just want to get in really badly, so im looking for anything to set me apart
just btw, the sat is by absolutely no means a reliable measure of iq

is there any chance of them bringing back boys ice hockey as a varsity sport? I’ve played for ten years and would like to play in university. Also, if they are bringing it back maybe it would help me get in?

I wonder how hard it is to play varsity tennis at MIT?

The ice hockey team, like several of the other varsity sports, has been converted into a club sport, so you can definitely still play in college. As a club sport coach myself, though, I can tell you that club sports have zero input into admissions decisions.

I don’t know anything about the number/quality of people who try out for the tennis team each year.

mollie
I was talking to fontaine (s/he made the 2014 decisions thread) and we realized you locked the thread and we were wondering if you could edit the thread for us to include this version of the stats (below). If it’s a pain to edit don’t worry about it I was just wondering if it was a possibility :)

Uh, I think it’s fine the way it is. If people have major awards or art supplements, (which few people have) they can put it in hooks, and we really don’t need a separate space for a comment on every single essay and every single rec. It doesn’t need to be unnecessarily complicated.
