MIT FAQ for application year 2009-2010

If there’s a way you can plausibly consider it a non-scholastic award, then put it in the non-scholastic section. If there’s no way you can do that, I wouldn’t – they want you to list your top five awards, not every award you’ve ever received.

No, MIT will only consider your top math and top science score. It doesn’t matter which you put down – they’re all considered equally.

How does MIT deal with senior year grades for EA applicants?

Do we only send mid-year semester grades after we get accepted?

Or do we send in like the first 2 grading period grades (with 9th, 10th, and 11th grade grades) along with our application (by the time that I apply, Ill have only done 2/3 grading periods in the semester).

Im just wondering because our English class has this full semester gradeing system (not divided into individual grading periods like my other classes because some grading periods have way more things collected as grades as other grading periods), and right now, I dont have that good of a grade becuase we’ve only had 2 grades in the class and I did not do well on one of my quizzes. However, since it’s cumalitive for the semester, I can get it up just by having more things taken for a grade in the class. If MIT just asks for grading period grades, this might be misleading…(essentially, someone can have grading period splits like C/B+/A/A final exam and get an A for the semester becuase by the end of the first grading period, that person has a C, the second that person has a B+ using cumulative and A by the third grading period-which is the only grade that matters for the semester—however that might be misleading if we just send in the first two grading period grades…)?

You send current grades with the application, then updated grades for the first half of the year as soon as they’re available (which is usually after EA students are admitted, so IIRC this is only required if you are deferred).

I think Im misunderstanding something:

Current grades as in grades in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade?

Or current grades as in grades in 9th, 10th, and 11th grades + grades for the applicable grading periods in 12th grade?

And 1 more quesiton:

On the AP reported scores/classes, should we list all of our scores first and then the AP classes that we are taking senior year (ones that do not have scores). Or should we only list the scores that could be used for credit at MIT and then the classes that I am taking that could end up giving us credit at MIT if I do well on them?

It only gives 12 blanks…I have room to put all my scores for all my AP tests, but I do not have room to do this + put my AP classes that I am currently taking. Which would be more preferable? The section asks for all AP courses taken/scores if applicable.

Thanks.

Ok last question.

MIT has made both essays mandatory this year, both being 200-250 each. Does that mean that by making the word limit a range as opposed to a solid number (for example 500), MIT is emphasizing that exceeding the word limit is more looked down upon that those of other years? Cause I have a 320 word essay that can’t be shorten without losing it’s meaning

@ Djokovic, you can shorten any piece of writing and retain the original meaning. As an example, I’ve shortened your post:

Original (65 words):

Shortened version (23 words):
How strict is MIT about this year’s 200-250 word limit per essay? I can’t seem to shorten a 320-word essay, and I’m worried.

Mollie! Where does it say you put in your current grades. I don’t see it anywhere on the application. Grades for the first trimester won’t be out until Mid November. There are no grades to report. There is a 6 week progress notice. Do you put that grade on the application even it means nothing?

Guys, I can’t really answer technical application questions like those – I applied eight years ago, remember.

I submitted my overnight visit registration on the 13th, and haven’t heard back yet. The visit is supposed to be on the 27th, at what point should I try to contact the overnight office?

ha CalAlum you are silly. Yes I get your point, but sometimes you have to evaluate what you gain by saying something above the limit and what you might lose in going above recommended limit.

Should I list my summer program under both summer activities and scholastic accomplishments? (It’s one of the example programs listed in the the admission’s blog about the distinction between scholastic/nonscholastic achievements.)

Does MIT consider freshman high school grades for the application? Because since then, I got 4.0’s, but a 3.5 in freshman year.
Thanks

Yes, MIT considers freshman grades.

Note, you’ve done it right - they’ll see improvement from a reasonable GPA to an awesome 4.0 as a bonus  I don’t think you should worry about it.

Wow. MIT application here we go. This thread has been helpful in answering a lot of questions I’ve had along the way (so far). Thanks again Mollie, et al.

I’m sure I’ll be back with questions of my own.

anyone know how long it takes for them to process teacher recs? I know both my teachers mailed them last week, and I’m not expecting them to be processed so soon, but what’s the point where one should start worrying?

You shouldn’t start worrying until Matt posts a blog entry saying they’ve finished processing all the mail, which is usually around mid-November. :)

There can be a big lag between when your application components are submitted and when they’re updated on the tracker. This isn’t a problem – odds are, your stuff really is at MIT and is getting to your folder in the proper way, and if your stuff isn’t there, it’s not a problem from MIT’s point of view if your teacher sends a duplicate recommendation in mid-November.

Thanks mollie :)

Just an update for people who may be wondering, when I checked today both recommendations had been processed, so in my case it took about a week from the day they were mailed to the day they were processed.

Hey Mollie, big Q for you. I haven’t sent my SAT scores yet cause I wanna see what I get in the Oct SAT first. Would sending the scores around Oct 24 be a bit too late for people going Early Action? (deadline Nov. 1st)
Cause I heard that regular score reports take like forever to get to colleges, months even.

Or should I rush them?

Thanks! :)
