MIT FAQ for application year 2010-2011 (with answers by MITChris)

^Ah. Thanks, Mikalye. That’s what I figured. Thought maybe there was something else I needed to know, by the way you mentioned MIT’s aid earlier. :)

The trick to never being wrong is always to hedge just enough to ensure that you’ll be right. ;)

Hello,

will MIT mail a decision letter to internationals regardless of acceptance?
Thanks!

no, we will not. i believe we are still mailing acceptance letters internationally this year. but folks whom are not admitted, international or domestic, simply receive their decision online tomorrow.

I might be being paranoid, but does this mean in the near future you might cut the whole ‘tube’ thing for accepted internationals?

So for someone living in the UK, it is a good sign if we don’t hear something tomorrow? Or are acceptance letters also mailed electronically at 9:26? Because there’s no mail until at least Tuesday morning…

Chris,

My daughter is able to log in to her My MIT account with the user name and password, but when she goes to log in to the decision site, it says no My MIT account found. She emailed admissions and they said to try again and make sure caps lock is off. She has tried multiple times with the same result. Any suggestions? It would be unfortunate if she was unable to access her decision tonight.

I was able to help her this morning, she was not logging out of My MIT before attempting to log in to the decisions page - thought I would share this in case anyone else was having trouble (but then again, this is MIT, there are probably few who would not be able to figure this out yourselves).

Another question Chris if you don’t mind:

I just checked my financial aid status, and it turns out my noncustodial parent has not handed in two forms I gave him a while ago. Now seeing as it is so close to decision date, should I wait before asking him to send them in?

count down!!!

i confirmed we will not be sending any mail notices to anyone at all, admitted or not, international or not.

when will financial aid decisions become available for EA admitted students?

Financial Aid packages are released on April Fool’s day.

Can you tell us approximately what percent of waitlisted applicants choose to stay on the waitlist each year? I saw that last 723 received a waitlist notification and 63 were accepted off the waitlist, but I would like to know what percentage of people who received a waitlist notification actually tried to get accepted. Also if you have any additional information on the prospects for us waitlisted people, we’d love to hear it.

I submitted my application in October for the EA round and was deferred, only to have to now wait until May for a final decision. I’m considering just removing myself from the waitlist and ending it now if my chances are very small.

This has nothing to do with my application nor MIT specifically. It just so happens that I only thought of asking you right after I got my decision (which was neither surprising nor heart-breaking. Thank the admissions dept for even considering me, and for doing the impossible in reducing 18,000 apps to a 1,800 or even less).

Anyway, do you believe that US universities in general would be more impressed, or find it more useful, to have an engineering elective/course at a high school? Do you think this would be beneficial to a college prep-ish high school?

Looks like 1000 waitlisted this year. for more details see

Good luck.

Since which grade MIT looks average?

FAQ for 2011-2012 will start soon, somewhere else. But, here’s one last question.

If a student is to take the SAT in May, he/she can request a free score sending to MIT. But, if he took the test in January, can he have the scores sent now?

Hi,
I have some questions:
<a href=“MIT Admissions”>MIT Admissions;
From reading the above MIT site, if I understood it correctly: I have to ask teachers to complete the evaluation sheets on hardcopy? (After printing out the templates etc)

Do I then, have to send of a bulk of papers to US (I’m in France at the moment) to be literally delivered to MIT?

Is there a system where you can ask teachers online to complete the forms?
Sorry if this seems like a silly question: I am new to the ‘MyMIT application’ and I am just a bit confused.

Thank you to anybody who can give me a hand! :)

annathecat -

there is no online form. however, your teachers can fax us copies of the hard version. this is what we prefer.
