MIT FAQ for application year 2010-2011 (with answers by MITChris)

basically, yes.

Sorry, I lied. Do you superscore between the SAT and ACT? I got a 30 in reading but a 740 in CR, should I send in both scores or just the better ACT?

Hello, admissions website states this for transfer apps:

Is the ACT not an accepted substitute for the SATI?

^ to kinda play on ripemango’s question: would it look stupid if we submit both ACT and SAT?

Btw a 30 reading is like a 670 CR I think

We cross-superscore the SAT/ACT (so if you have a better CR SAT and math ACT we’ll look at the different tests)

You MUST take the SAT IIs no matter which reasoning test you take

No, it will not look ‘stupid’ to submit both, it’s fine.

You are so helpful

^Seconded!

Is the teacher evaluation form supposed to be handwritten or typed/printed?

My teacher said the space/question was too little to elaborate.

The teacher evaluation could be handwritten or typed, although I assume typing is easier for most teachers. Your teacher could attach a separate sheet answering the questions if she doesn’t feel the space given is adequate.

Many teachers will attach a separate sheet. Some just write a letter, others just answer the questions we ask, others do both.

First off, thank you for taking the time to answer everyone’s questions.

One of the questions asks if you have ever been suspended from your school or “left voluntarily for an extended period of time”. I did not attend school for about two months because I was sick. Was that question meant to focus only on disciplinary problems?

A question about school transcript:

for the attached transcript, does it have to show records from 9th to 12th grade?
I moved school in the middle of my 10th year, and I don’t know if I need to attach the transcript from my other school…
Or, if my new school has incorporated my old school’s grades into their transcript, would that suffice?

I really appreciate your helping out all of us! :)

@whoa^3 -

As long as you explained to us that you missed for sickness you did fine.

@unlocked -

We need all your grades from 9-12. It’s fine if they incorporate it.

Hey MITChris-
Does your intended major affect your admissions chances? I want to major in engineering, but have no math/science ECs (I go to a small, rural school where they simply are not offered). Would I have a higher chance of admission if I put my intended major as political science or something?

^ That won’t hurt you. Though as far as interesting science ECs, do you know anything about amateur radio? Getting licensed is fairly easy. Buying a radio can be expensive, but there might be a nearby group you can join with their own equipment :)

@irish -

no.

Question on the self reported coursework.

I took a high school class in middle school and it’s on my transcript, but the grade on the transcript is “H.” For some reason or another, my high school doesn’t give me credit for the class, but rather an honorary mention.

So I was wondering what should be filled in for this on the coursework form, (year, level, etc.) and what I should put as the final grade, the H or the real grade I got (in which case I might need a middle school transcript to prove).

I might be misunderstanding this, but I got a pamphlet from MIT today and it said the November test date is fine for early action, but isn’t the test date past the deadline for early action?

Yes, but the admissions officers are reading applications for about a month or five weeks after the applications are due, so it’s fine for the test scores to come in a bit later. The November test date is indeed fine for EA, as you can see on the [deadlines page](http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/deadlines/index.shtml).

Can, or should, we put “self study” in parenthesis for self study AP tests under the self reported AP classes and tests?

What if we have more APs taken and in progress than the 12 slots listed?

Can, or should, we put “self study” for AP courses in progress, or is this useless since there’s no verification?

Is it okay if activities are repeated on the 5 main Extracurricular Activities section and the Summer Activities? Should we trust that if the activity is on one that it’s sufficient?

What if I’m not sure of my AMC score last year and I don’t think the school still has it, should I put what I think I got? What if it’s wrong and you find out and I get screwed?

I self study a whole bunch of subjects, but not for credit or anything really, should I not put them on the self-reported coursework if they’re not on my transcript? If not, should I just put them as ECs since their a pretty big part of what I do in my spare time?

Section 7 on Part 2 of the application makes you check the boxes for calculus, bio, physics, and chem classes. I never officially took a calc class, but I self studied AP Calc BC (got a 5, so verification) and now I’m self studying MV Calc because the city college class doesn’t work with my schedule - should I still check the box?

If you simply do not have a Humanities rec or something, is your app invalid?

Is a resume needed for most cases, or is the info on the application often enough to understand the student and his/her activities?
