I’m an international student, actually from Germany but currently in Colombia, doing voluntary service.
I have a few problems/questions concerning the application:
Is it absolutely necessary to hand in the transcript from ninth grade until graduation?
Is it okay to let somebody translate the transcript who is not a certified translator?(e.g. an English teacher)
My teachers nearly don’t speak English so it’s hard to get a letter of recommendation in Englisch, same question here about the translation.
Does MIT value language skills?
I will go back to Germany in January. My German adress should be more helpful, but I need to have my EC near Medellin, Colombia Does the system assign a new EC if I change my adress to Germany?

I have already read a lot in this forum, but haven’t found satisfying answers to my questions. If they have already been answered please give me the corresponding link!
Thanks in advance for your answers!

I don’t know anything about Naviance submission – Chris will have to answer this one.

This isn’t a totally infrequent occurrence. I believe they are aware when reading your application that you’ve applied previously, but I don’t think they’ll generally go back to your previous application.

This is all out of my anxiety. Say If I get accepted to MIT by any chance for entering as a freshmen in Sep 2012; nd I defer my enrollment for a years time for pursuing my independent pro.and If I happen to finish the work in less than 1 year, Can i begin my classes immediately at MIT or should i wait till September 2013. Please clear my query soon.

Couple questions:
I researched at an MIT lab this summer (not as a part of RSI), and had an adviser and a boss. The adviser has gone to an exclusive company, and was a research assistant. The boss is a long time MIT professor. Should I have just 1 write a rec, or both b/c of their different perspectives/positions? Is the professor preferable because of his position? Also, is their a way an MIT professor can ‘recruit’ a student that they want to work in their lab again as a urop or know is a valued asset?

1)Similar to a previous question about EPGY but a bit different - I have taken courses at EPGY; I looked at website and they are able to send official transcripts. Is it fine for MIT to receive 2 separate transcripts - my school transcript and EPGY transcript? (since the EPGY courses do not appear on my transcript)

2)I moved schools at the end of 9th grade. Would MIT prefer for my previous school to directly send the transcript, or for my current school to send it along with my transcript in my current school?

I applied last year, got rejected and am applying again. however, i cant make a new mymit account until they purge last year’s records. If they do that, how will they see my previous application?

also they said that they will not purge the data until beginning of october. Is there any way i could get the recommendation letter forms ahead of time or at least the questions so i can ask my teachers to be thinking about it until i cna get the actual forms?

Do you compare students from the same school or geographical area? If a lot of other strong applicants from my school are applying does that affect how admissions would view my applicants and put me at a disadvantage?

When you say that they consider you as an individual, do you mean like they consider what opportunities the person had available and how well they took advantage of the opportunities?

also, is there any advantage to applying under early admission other than just finding out earlier? like do they have a better change of getting in?

Also, for early action applicants that are accepted, are they mostly geniuses who’ve placed in international competitions, cured a disease, or something super amazing?

I apologize, i found one of the middle posts first and so was not aware of the first post.

however it still leaves my question about the type of people accepted under early action program unanswered. i fully understand that most applicants to mit are not super geniuses, but ive been told by many that the best of the best usually apply for early action. i was asking about the types of people that get accepted under early action specifically and if the majority have super amazing feats

also, i do not think that “When you say that they consider you as an individual, do you mean like they consider what opportunities the person had available and how well they took advantage of the opportunities?” was answered in the first post.

eggseater, I don’t know that there’s a right answer with respect to undergrad admissions. In graduate school admissions, typically the professor will ask the postdoc/grad student you worked with directly to outline or write the recommendation, and the professor will edit and sign it. So your professor will probably be familiar with that structure, and if you ask him to write the letter, he will get input from the person with whom you worked directly – that would be the route I would suggest.

It’s no problem.

The pools of EA and RD accepted students at MIT aren’t substantially different. You can check out the CC results threads from the past few years to see if you can discern a pattern, but I’ve never seen that EA accepted students are more qualified in general than RD accepted students – both groups are bright and accomplished and impressive.

As for your second question, yes, that is what Chris means in his post above.

I want to send a recommendation letter from my professor for my summer research, but I didn’t know where to send it. Do they send it by email or by mail? And, if email, what is the email? Thanks for the help! :-)

I want to send a DVD of my dance performances so I was wondering how and where do I send it. The instructions in the MIT admissions were not clear about how to send a physical copy of the DVD so please help! Thanks!

Supplemental recommendations should be submitted on paper and addressed to the address at the bottom of the admissions webpage.

For non-music, non-graphic arts supplements, the admissions site seems to strongly encourage uploading the video to, e.g., Youtube and sending a link in lieu of sending the physical DVD. Perhaps Chris can weigh in.

I have heard that MIT will purge their data from last year’s applicants at the beginning of October, Could you answer when exactly it will be purged? Also, is there any chance that the purge will be delayed?

I was told in August that the purge would occur at the beginning of September, and recently I was told that the purge would occur at the beginning of October.
