Mollie - Is there a general expectation to admit equal number of boys and girls?

@addy -

I can’t. It’s not really as formal as that.

@gyx -

We have a preference for well-matched students to MIT, of any gender or socioeconomic background.

@texas -

I think there is an expectation, or a hope, that we should be able to do that given gender parity in the general population. And we have been able to achieve that over the last few years, to the point where the MIT undergraduate body is nearly at gender parity.

But if you’re asking whether we compromise the integrity of our process on the basis of gender - no.

Would being interested in engineering as an Asian but also literature be a possible hook?

Thank you for your response. This forum is extremely useful!
Two more questions:
- Early action is not available for internationals. Is there a chance that will change later this year?
and 2. If I really want to play varsity for MIT how and when should I contact the coach?

@addy -

“Hooks” aren’t as simple as that. “Engineering + literature” doesn’t sufficiently differentiate students from the rest of the class. Don’t worry. If there is a compelling reason to admit you to the class - which is the mental model we use to evaluate applications - we will find it in your application.

@mitfan

1) No
2) In the early fall, around September would be good

mitfan, just to expand a little, internationals are only considered during RD because the admissions office is only able to admit a small number of international students. Since only a small number of students can be admitted, the admissions office prefers to consider all international applicants during the same round.

You can contact the coaches for MIT varsity sports by going to the recruiting page on the MIT athletics website and selecting your sport.

Why is EA not available for internationals? :C

See my post above yours. :)

Thank you very much MITChris and molliebatmit.
If ED were an option I’d go for it without a doubt, but I guess I’ll have to wait for RD. Really looking forward to applying to MIT!

I’m planning on applying as a transfer. I had to work for two semesters to pay for my classes, so I only enrolled in one class during these semesters. Later, I was able to get back on track and study full time. will the part-time period hurt me in any way ?

Thank you very much MITChris and molliebatmit!

I have SAT I and 3 SAT II scores. I plan to take another SAT II. Should I send the scores I have right now or should I send all of them together in October?

you can send them all in october

MITChris what are your thoughts about the part time situation i mentiond on pg 2 ?

Looking at the admission web site, helpful tips. If you have taken courses outside high school, indicate in the “Course Title” where they were taken. Do you need to have the university send MIT an official transcript of these classes? or can you forward to MIT a sealed envelope you receive from them?

official transcript

how does MIT look at AP tests (just the test- with no course)? Do they consider it for admissions?

not very much.

There is something i didn’t understand
Does Taking the TOEFL for an international means that i don’t need to sned the sat 1 results???
(toefl doesn’t have math section!!!)

Chris, what happens to scores if they are sent for the June test? I am wondering based on post 32 because some people have marked MIT as a recipient when registering for the test.

Correct, you don’t need to send the SAT I results if you send the TOEFL. You do need to send your SAT II math results, though, so it’s not really a problem that the TOEFL doesn’t have a math section.
