MIT FAQ for application year 2011-2012 (with answers by MITChris)

Application mistake question:
When I created the MyMIT account, I accidentally typed my full name under my first name so now there I have a repeat of my last name. I already submitted Part I of my application and paid the application fee so I don’t think I can create another account. What should I do?

^ Email admissions and let them know.

Okay I have this question which has been eating me inside out for days.

I’m an international applicant doing AS level and A2 papers all in june 2011- so I won’t have A level grades until later. But every forum I read, international applicants submit their AS grades which is like the basis of their application.

Am I at a huge disadvantage here? I’ll still submit my IGCSE and mid year reports and A level predicted grades…

Is the admissions process geographic blind in terms of understanding the “context” of a kids opportunities? Like how would they weigh a kid from mass. and a kid from South Dakota?

No, mid-year reports are for applicants in US schools only. For that matter, they’re only for students who are currently in school.

Just send an email to the general admissions email address, and you can get it sorted out.

I can’t access the Association of Student Activities group list right now (which lists all active student groups). Piper, could you look this up if you get a second?

The latest stats I can find on student origins are here, although the list hasn’t been updated in a few years. Note that this tells you only how many Indian students were at MIT at the time, not how many were admitted each year.

I can’t authoritatively answer here, as I don’t know what the standard is, but generally speaking, you should submit what you can and not worry beyond that.

No – geography is one of the factors considered in assessing a student’s context.

Hey thanks so much. I’ll do that ASAP. Enjoy your night! :-D

Oops sorry forgot to ask something. I did not see anything about submitting creative writing supplements on the website. Does MIT accepts novel excerpts, short stories etc as supplements?

Are students who decide to retake their AS level exams with A levels at a disadvantage? And do they still have to submit previous results if they are retaking the exams anyway?

Oh and I forgot to ask, do we send the original or photocopies of your GCSE/A level results or do we just put the results on the transcript from the school?

[Enrollment Statistics: MIT Office of the Registrar](<a href=“Statistics & Reports | MIT Registrar”>Statistics & Reports | MIT Registrar) this is the geograpic disctibution of MIT students. quite up-to-date. looks like it was updated October, 7.

Is there any way to find out how many students from a specific country applied in a specific year and how many of those got selected?

There are only about 100 seats for internationals. If you add all the countries, you will see them add up to 450 but some of them may have stayed longer than 4 years.

India is averaging 8 seats an year.

No. of seats doesn’t do me much good without no. of applicants a year.

8 selected out of 50 or 8 selected out of 500.

That’s a pretty big difference.

Can we assume admissions is pretty overwhelmed at this point so that acknowledgments for arts supplements may be a little delayed?

Thanks.

Hi! I was just wondering if it’s okay to Xpresspost mail the Teacher Recs (if they give the sealed envelopes to me for mailing)?

"No. of seats doesn’t do me much good without no. of applicants a year.

YOu will never get that broken out. You will be treated as part of a pool of international applicants.

^ for ED or RD?

He wants to know how many people apply by country since the statistics for attending students are available.

Although applicant’s level of interest is not considered for admission, if the EC notes that he didnt sense much “enthusiasm” or such, would that necessarily be a very negative thing?

Is it necessary that the transcript we send in from our counselor have our AP scores? Mine has my SAT and ACT scores (along with grades, etc) but is missing my SAT subject tests and my AP scores.
