MIT FAQ for application year 2011-2012 (with answers by MITChris)

The application is usually released in mid-to-late August.

How can I get my name italicized?

You can get your name italicized by becoming a college admissions officer.

How do I become one? ;)

Now to the point.
Does the transcript need to be sent directly from the high school? Is it OK if I mail the sealed envelop (that I receive) from my high school with my application packet?

Hi,

I just opened my first ever MyMIT account (also the CC)! About MyMIT, when actually does the account give me contact information of the interviewer?

I think people typically start seeing EC contact info around the beginning of September.

About AP exams: when we list the AP courses we have taken, does MIT see the scores we have received on the AP exam? I believe I read somewhere that the only place the college board will send your scores is to the university you are matriculating at…
Thanks!

Normally you fill out a college to send AP scores to when taking exams senior year. So, the college gets them AFTER you were admitted. You self-report them on your college apps with no official report from College Board (and, it is my belief that their unofficial nature is what keeps them from being a significant part of the admissions process at many colleges).

About two months ago I created a MyMIT account mainly so I would receive emails on any news and such that’s going on at MIT. Recently I have read of a few cases where someone would open a MyMIT account a year or two before applying in order to view the app or begin filling it out for the following year. But the next year they were not able to open the app until mid September. Since I created an account a few years before I would apply, will I not be able to start on the application until mid september the year I apply even though I am not planning on opening the app before actually applying? Is it just the viewing of the application too early before applying or is it the creation of the account a few years early that causes the app not to opened until mid September?
Thanks a lot for any help you may have!

Is this for real? o.O

My recollection is that a few people have had problems if they indicated they were applying for class of (this year)-1 when they opened the account the previous year. But if the application comes out and you find that you can’t view it, you just need to email the admissions office to get yourself straightened out – there’s not an automatic lockout until mid-September or anything like that.

A quick (maybe out of place) question.
You offer crossregistration with Harvard. What is Harvard’s limit on the number of classes that can be taken at MIT?

I don’t know Harvard’s limit, but MIT students can take no more than two classes per semester at Harvard (from a typical courseload of four classes).

Can interviewers be changed if his location is distant from mine?

Yes, possibly – if your assigned EC is too far away from you, contact the admissions office. It’s possible that you can’t be reassigned, because there are no other ECs in your area, in which case your interview will be waived. But it’s possible that you were assigned the wrong interviewer because of a glitch in the system.

how can you be sure if MIT received your test scores? I took SATIIs december 2010 and my ACT this past march… I sent both scores to MIT and to Princeton, and Princeton said they did not get my SAT II scores…

Also, I printed out my teacher rec forms and now on my mymit account, they don’t show up to print them again, why? What if your teacher lost them…? :frowning: lol

hi isaac -

you must contact the college board. did you apply last year or are you applying this year?

I am going to apply this fall, I made an account with MIT last year because I was scheduled a visit and wanted to be on the mailing list. I have old emails from the SAT IIs that confirm my order for the score reports to be sent. The ACT we took through our school, but I definitely put MIT down to receive the scores for both tests.

Hi,
It’s stated on the MIT website that there is no preference between ACT and SAT. When I looked at the admissions statistics, though, I saw that at the upper end of the spectrum for both, those who have higher SAT scores are more likely to get admitted than those who have high ACT scores (e.g. 19% admit rate for 750-800 SAT CR scorers, compared to 15% admit rate for 34-36 ACT Composite). Based on the ACT-SAT concordance tables ([Estimated Relationship between ACT Composite Score and SAT CR+M+W Score](http://www.act.org/aap/concordance/estimate.html)), though, a 34 ACT could relate to a 2250 SAT combined score, which corresponds to 750 in each section. That being said, does a 34 ACT hold less weight than 2250 SAT, or a 35/36 ACT compared to 2330/2400 SAT? Are there any underlying reasons for the disparity between the acceptance rates, or is it just a matter or luck based on the holistic acceptance process? Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks!

I’m not an admissions officer, but I’d be willing to bet that there’s not a statistically significant difference between the percentage of students admitted in a given ACT composite band and an equivalent SAT composite band.

Remember that the statistics posted on the admissions page are a snapshot of a single admissions cycle, and that the stats given for SAT scores are broken down by CR, math, and writing. If the SAT scores were not broken down, I imagine you would see more congruence, although I don’t think 15% vs. 19% is a huge disparity in the first place.
