Did anyone get a paper app from MIT??
The presentation is uber creative and just perfect

Bangkok, Thailand

I got one. MIT is pretty fast in mailings. Did you notice that the aliens on the envelope and on the app cover are different? LoL...

Have you guys sent in your apps yet?

You guys are lucky; after 9.11 and recent policies, there're so many fewer int'l applicants than before, so you actually have a bigger chance. Besides, US raised the restriction on visa applying and affects countries like China. You all know how a decrease in the # of Chinese applicants is gonna help you guys. So good luck!

Thanks shanghaiwes, the same goes to you!

I didn't know about the new visa restrictions. Can you tell me more about that?

Did any of ppl apply EA anywhere?? Did u start ur MIT essays??

India

I applied to Harvard EA,not that I have any chance of getting in though...
:p

But do they have a quota for each country? Say, if Country A's applicants are very strong, but there're so many... will they be disadvantaged compared to those from other countries with fewer applicants?

yes.... although they dont admit it

Is that an assumption? I don't think colleges look at it that way; doing so would make them get less qualified students. I think they compare int'ls to int'ls, regardless of what country they come from.

Earlier someone posted a link to a page on the MIT website listing the number of enrolled students from each country. I tried googling for a while, but I couldn't find it, so I'd appreciate it if someone could post it again. Anyways, from what I remember, 10 Thais enrolled (one of the few countries with a double-digit enrollment) as opposed to only 2 Canadians. The 10 Thais were probably Olympiad medalists.

here: http://web.mit.edu/iso/www/stats/2004/index.html

btw there are 17 Undergrad Canadians, that means around 4 are admitted each year.
For Thailand 11 --> 2-3 are admitted each year
So ur ahead

Yeah, thanks Hello, but it is not the one I was looking for. The page you posted showed the breakdown by country for the entire undergraduate student body, not for the class of 2008. Anyways, I appreciate it. :)

Are you guys going for the SAT I + 3 SAT IIs option or the TOEFL + 2 SAT IIs option?

The page I was talking about, which I was unable to locate, actually showed 10 Thais enrolling in the class of 2008, but only 2 Canadians. My point is that int'l students are not compared only to those in their country, but to every other int'l students.

Maybe the other Canadian acceptees chose Harvard or Princeton??

LoL... yah, maybe. :)
