** MIT International Applicants' Thread 2017 **

Yeah probably.
I would attend english classes anyways !

@imo404 Excuse me my friend! Where can I find what MITChris said? Thank you.

country:india
course:6

Currently (in this thread) we have MIT Applicants from:

United Kingdom
France
India
Mauritius
Israel
Tunisia
Australia
Korea
Canada

Pretty cool!

Sorry for the really late reply- haven’t been on CollegeConfidential for quite a while! been busy :P

Yea it might be more than the realistic amount… it is a bit of an over estimate as a lot of the top Mauritian students have the same background as the Indians and Chinese, and therefore are generally really good with maths, sciences and computers - as well as a decent work ethic. I knew of a few people who planned to apply. Having spoken to them more recently, I’ve found that that changed their mind as they didn’t feel too confident about their A Level/IB and SAT marks.
But Mauritius has sent one or two over to MIT over the past 4 odd years I believe.

Honestly, their isn’t much competition, well not at the same sort of level as in most 1st world countries. We do have a couple really amazing swimmers, but there really aren’t many, and most probably won’t be particularly great swimmers due to their physique (short, small hands or feet etc). Some do make times close to a second or two off olympic qualifying times, and take part in the common wealth and african games, so I suppose they aren’t terrible- but some of the swimmers in the nationals could barely swim (don’t know why the coaches let them swim… oh well

anyone here who has already been to Cambridge MA?? I have never really had the resources to go there:( My only experience to the place is the movie -the social network:)

I’ve been there twice, once in October 2011 to stay overnight with a senior at MIT, visit family and see Harvard (of course… :stuck_out_tongue: ) and the second in 2012 for a summer jazz camp at Berklee.

Also when I visited MIT and talked to the international admissions person, she was surprised that I came all this way to visit. Not many internationals visit either because of a superficial interest in the institution or just a lack of funds

To all Int’l applicants, why do you think you should be accepted ? @imo404

Very good question. I’ll answer in a few sections;

Academically;
I have always loved learning more - more specifically in maths and the sciences, although I like being knowledgeable in other areas too. I have always taken the most difficult courses possible, or asked to take the most difficult course if it hadn’t initially been offered (eg with my A Level further maths… my class of four were the first four in the whole of South Africa to ever write the exam, and probably will be for a few years or so by the looks of the lack of interest in incoming years). I only realised recently that I have a passion for learning. I don’t always like being taught, or being in a school type environment, but I love learning new ideas and concepts and trying to put them to use - even if only theoretically! MIT has everything anyone could want if they wanted to pursue their passions. The opportunities are outstanding, the equipment on hand is second to very few if any and think of all the amazing lecturers and professors. From a little experience, it is 1000x more pleasant and rewarding teaching a group of people who are really interested in learning what you have to offer, and I feel I can as well as bring a different aspect of thinking to solve problems.

MIT;
The distribution requirement involving sport really attracts me as I really enjoy my sport (though I find it won’t be much of a challenge compared to some of the social science type distribution requirements). The area is amazing, and for me at least, the more comfortable I feel in my environment (through freedom, attractions, aesthetics, etc) the better I work… and I don’t think many unis actually have such a great area. As much as I know MIT has a lot of brilliant swimmers, also like to think that I might be able to make the team - which means that I can contribute to the university in a way apart from academically. I’d also love to join a band (I can’t sing for s**t but I can play guitar decently) and no campus can have too many bands haha!

Unfortunately I haven’t decided exactly where I want to go with engineering, which means that I haven’t been able to be more specific about where I want to go for programs, specific professors or equipment.

@rajoftheuk

I agree there, a lot of my sister’s professors seemed surprised that her family had flown in from Mauritius for her graduation. For me it was opportunity to see the Princeton campus and take in their reunions and graduation vibes, but I didn’t get the chance to see the nearby unis that I was planning on applying to unfortunately.

PS check page 11 - I finally replied to your post from the beginning about the number of people applying from Mauritius :stuck_out_tongue: sorry so late haha

Just saw in my website’s analytical data that I got a visit from Needham,Massachusetts!! I guess MIT have started reading International applications :D

awesome:) All the best guys…and take your dancing shoes out to the largest, awesomest party in town:)

I don’t have “dancing shoes” hahahaha :p

@rajot : I guess I can’t do that with my youtube video… Would like to know when they see it !
Is your app complete (all recs + tests scores) ? Mine isn’t (I sent my ACT scores 1 month ago but they didn’t receive them). I guess they start with the completed apps

Yup my app is complete :D

mid-year report???^^

Mostly done :smiley: just need to work out if I put my final results into the Mid year report area… GOT MY A Level RESULTS BACK BABY!!!

Apart from that all scores, recs and essays completed! It feels good to be done with the apps (even though some essays were fun to write).

What was the essay prompt you enjoyed the most guys ?
I really loved Stanford’s “Roommate essay”, because it wasn’t such a serious prompt for once. If someone wants to read it, send me a PM

I think it’s a tie between the Stanford roommate essay, Stanford what matters most essay and the Common App personal essay

And yes I sent the mid year report :slight_smile: my school doesn’t do one so i just added some distinctions I forgot to put in the app
