MIT interview guide and discussion

Is there a deadline for when the interview must be completed? I just found out who my EC was about a week ago, and I’ve already contacted him, but I’m really busy next week so I’m not sure that I can schedule an interview for before Oct 20 :(

No, October 20 is just the last day to contact your interviewer, so if you contacted him, you’re all set. He will tell you when the last day is that he prefers to have interviews so he can turn in his interview report on time.

oh thank you so much! that’s a huge relief :)

I just had a quick question. I sent an e-mail to my interviewer and did not receive a reply for a week. Then I sent another one, but still did not receive a reply for another week (they only had the e-mail listed). Last Monday, I was assigned a new interviewer and I sent them an e-mail/left a message, but I still haven’t heard back. I’m applying EA and starting to get a bit worried since the deadline to contact the interviewer is Oct 20. I also e-mailed interview at mit.edu yesterday, but wanted to see if anyone here had information about this kind of situation.

Thanks!

I had the same situation. You need to call the admissions office. I called Friday and had my new EC set up in about 20 min.

@mahalo
Thanks. I’ll call them.

Also, do the interviewers have to submit their report by Nov 1st?

So I called the admissions office and explained my situation. They told me to wait another week. When I mentioned that I was applying EA, they said an interview wasn’t required and it won’t affect the admissions process, but I know how important it is. The admissions officers stressed that a lot during the summer when I went to MITES.

I’m just really worried right now. My new interviewer didn’t reply to my call or e-mail (it’s been a week) and Oct 20th is just 2 days away.

Try not to worry about it too much.

You’ve been in contact with MIT, and their advice is to wait another week. If you do that, there are two possible outcomes: 1) your EC contacts you, in which case you set up your interview; 2) your EC doesn’t contact you, in which case you contact MIT again and they try to set you up with another EC.

In either case, I’m sure either EC will do everything possible to interview you for EA, because you’ve done your part by trying to contact your EC by October 20. And even if you can’t be interviewed in time for an EA report to be submitted, you can doubtless be interviewed in time for RD decisions if you’re deferred (and if you’re admitted, it doesn’t matter anyway).

Hello,
Before you lambast me for asking this question which has been asked and answered often, I need some specific advice. I know I shouldn’t dress too casual, and I shouldn’t dress too formal, with somewhere in between. I know I should wear either some nice jeans/slacks and a nice shirt.

My interview is at a Starbucks. But what my main question is, what do I do if it’s cold? I don’t really want to wear a suit to Starbucks, and I feel like a full-sleeved shirt would be a bit too formal. A sweater/jacket seem too casual. Thoughts? Please help. Thanks!

polo and khakis? also what is it with MIT and starbucks? it seems like all my friends who have had interviews have them there lol

I had mine at a wendy’s xD so yea, haha.

I think a nice polo and slacks or khakis are good. Nothing too formal or too casual

what’s the general policy for interviews at a restuarant/food place? do you pay separately or do you pay for both?

Well what happened for me was we were getting drinks and I was going to pay but he insisted on paying. So I let him, he was very generous. So I would just plan on buying for yourself, but if they insist on buying for you, let them, haha

Hey Mollie! (or anyone else who can help :))
My EC and I are kind of having schedule conflicts so we might not be able to meet up… I want to see if there’s another EC who can interview me, but if I get assigned a new EC, then the interview probably won’t be before November 1.
So is it possible to have my interview after November 1 if I’m applying EA?
Thanks!

I don’t know what the internal deadline is for ECs to submit their reports. You will have to ask the new EC what the last date he or she is comfortable interviewing you is.

Still, as I said above, even if you can’t be interviewed in time for an EA report to be submitted, the interview report will certainly be filed in time for RD decisions.

My EC never responded my email, I’ve sent him three emails since October 1st. His phone number isn’t on the MIT admission page. I am panicking right now since I’m applying EA… I’ve emailed MIT twice and no responses, I called them twice in the past two weeks and no one picked up the phone, either. What should I do now?

what kind of things did your interviewer ask you to bring? Is it normal to be asked to bring your application essays?

None whatsoever.

The interview usually goes on until the interviewer has all of the information that they need to write their report. That takes as long as it takes. Long is not necessarily good nor is short necessarily bad. The longest interview I have done in the past few years went on for ages as I conducted an extensive and ultimately fruitless search for any topic at all that the candidate actually cared about.

Sounds like you are doing the right thing. Look this does happen. I have had EC’s in my region rushed to hospital (and not surprisingly they haven’t responded to requests from their hospital bed). Last week I discovered that one EC in my region is being sent by his company abroad until Christmas (i.e. the entire interview season). I have had to reassign all of his candidates (he had 20). There are plenty of reasonable reasons why an EC might not be available.

As a rule, MIT is pretty good at cleaning up after these things. Deadlines can, in rare cases, be waived. Every candidate who should get an interview, gets an interview. Call MIT and explain the problem, and they should get you a new EC. When you contact the new EC, do explain the problem, but do not be demanding or insist that they fix things for you. That should automatically happen. Exact processes will differ depending largely on where in the world you are.

And although this probably goes without saying, double-check that you’re calling the correct undergraduate admissions office phone number, and that you’re calling during business hours on the east coast.
