MIT Interviews

Here’s probability 101:
No of medalists = <100
No. of Medalists living in metros = about 60-70
and finally, no. of medalists applying to MIT = let’s say 50.
Now out of those 50 medalists, you can guess how many live in metros and got interviews. (about 15 which somewhat represents the figure)
and BTW, this is just my assumption and opinion, I don’t have accurate figures regarding medalists. :-"
Anyways, best of luck everyone, IDK why am I banging my head against the wall when I’ve not even applied to MIT. It’s kinda unfair I guess :-L

so, is Harvard also looking for just medallists in India? BTW, has Harvard started the interviews for this academic year?

Why the heck would Harvard look for medalists, in case of MIT, it makes sense. I think Harvard is much more accommodating, and I think interviews for this year are over. If you were offered an interview, it means you’re on the fence. Clear-cut rejects and clear-cut admits are generally not offered interviews.

Ha, loving the discussion going on here
I am from quite rural area and am the first from this part to apply to US. So, a point in my favor!
Anyway, I’ve applied to these schools, (I’m mentioning the most likely outcome too, according to me ofc.)

  1. MIT- Reject
  2. Stanford-Reject/Waitlist
  3. Caltech- Reject
  4. Harvard- Waitlist/Reject
  5. Princeton- Probably Accept
  6. Yale-Accept
  7. Dartmouth-Accept
  8. Duke-reject
  9. UPenn- Don’t know really. depends on how need aware they’re.
  10. JHU- Same as above, most probably reject
  11. Columbia -Same as above, but most probably accept
  12. Cornell- Accept
  13. Brown- Sure Reject. i didn’t mention the open curriculum in the essay!!
  14. Amherst- Accept.
Those are just my speculations. I’m definitely being a lil overconfident, but please excuse it on my part. All my guesses are quite researched. I created a chance thread earlier from an account which I’m not able to log in now and most of my guesses are based on that I hope I’ve not offended anyone :)

Background[ul]

[li]Applied for Aid. Parents earn 9000$ per annum. (financial condition is quite poor-I’ve done quite a few odd jobs to help my family- worked as cycle mechanic and delivery boy)
[/li]

[li]SAT superscore- 2360 (CR-800, Math-800, Writing-760)
[/li]

[li]Subject tests- Math 2-800, Chemistry-780, Physics-770
[/li]

[li]A national math/science award (No, not any kind of medal :P). A regional science and badminton award. A few quite unique EC’s, which according to the alumni interviewer are extremely good and interesting (basically I created MOOC’s- can’t go into particulars cuz that would be detrimental to my anonymity). Environment club- VP, and founder of another unique club-not under school administration.
[/li]

[li]Class rank 1/100
[/li]

[li]LOR’s- Brimming with positivity and full of praise. I’ve read them :)
[/li]

[li]Academics- suffered in class 11th due to an incurable disease but have recovered in 12th. Counselor mentioned it in his LOR.
[/li]

[]Essays- Common App essay is based upon how I recovered from hardships (financial health, and physical health). Unique in presentation.
[]supplemental essays are not very unique in terms of content (I’d say the content is definitely average) but very very unique in presentation.[/ul]
That’s all folks! What do you think? Are my predictions accurate?

Stats are really good,
I just can’t believe that you read your own LORs, as per the CommonApp, did you waive the right to see your app materials? If yes, then don’t tell anyone that you read the LORs. SAT’s really good, you should’ve applied to some more safety schools, almost no other colleges (apart from need blind ones) will give you a full ride (which i think you need because your familial income is $9k). Your predictions are somewhat flawed. Here’s mine:
MIT - Accept/Waitlist (they love poor kids, no offense, I’m poor too)
Stanford - sure shot reject (it’s almost as selective as Harvard, plus you’re poor, so more selective for you)
Caltech - sure shot reject (they hate poor people, literally and they want more ECs in science)
Harvard - Accept/Waitlist
Princeton - Accept/Waitlist
Yale - Waitlist/Reject (it’s not as easy as you think, need blind, but has constraints)
Dartmouth - sure shot accept (but you’ll most probably not attend because it’s environment is a lot different from other ivies)
Duke - Accept/Waitlist
UPenn - Accept/Waitlist
JHU - sure shot reject
Columbia - Waitlist/reject
Cornell - Accept/waitlist (but won’t be able to attend unless you win the TATA scholarship too)
Brown - Waitlist/Reject
Amherst - Waitlist/Reject (HAH, you really thought they’d let you in so easily, it’s the best LAC and competition is fierce but I can’t really say)
I feel so sorry for you, you only applied to name brand schools, now if the worst case scenario happens, you’ll have nowhere to go!

I didn’t use any book per se for physics test. I gave it in class 11. Also, I’ll be appearing for boards in 2014 lol.
I agree with a lot of your speculations, @Duck007. However, there a few points I ought to clarify.

teacher let me see her LOR’s just a week ago. She told me that she just wants me know what she has written.
I created 2 MOOC’s- both were science/math based. Attended by 200 people. Almost all my awards are science and maths based. In fact, I was worried that I don’t have too many awards outside tech.
AND, as per my mathematical calculation based on your speculations, I’ve fairly good chance of getting into at least one of these colleges. I’d love to attend Dartmouth, too. Simply because of its D-plan.
If need be, I’ll take a loan. There’s nothing more important to me than education. Plus, I can always attend Indian colleges too.
Do you now have any particular comments on my EC’s, awards, and jobs I’ve done?

Yup, Massive Open Online courses. I know education here sucks.

I am being shameful and asking you again,
Do you now have any particular comments on my EC’s, awards, and jobs I’ve done?

1 in Kolkata, 1 in Delhi, 1 in Hyderabad, and 2 in Pune. There are hundreds of applicants from big cities who weren’t interviewed. I DID apply to MIT, HYPSM are on my list. Expecting an outright rejection, though. Bengali is my first language, why do you ask?

Where did Duck007’s posts vanish? :O

maybe he was banned ? or quit cc

@confusedhexagon : What are those numbers for? And how did you obtain them?

I read a post by someone here saying Harvard is looking for medalists. However, I can confidently state that it is not true since I know 4 people (including me) who got a Harvard interview and only 1 of us is an olympiad medalist.

@rishabh : Hey where are you from? And are the other 4 from your school as well?

@QuarkAssassin I am from Delhi. I am from GD Goenka
No I know 2 other people from Delhi- 1 DPS RKP and 1 Amity International

Also, the headboy of DPS RP, Kolkata has got one.

As far as I can estimate there are less than 10 total interviews. Again, just an estimate.

Ah I see. How did you get to know about these people? And is it true that they will accept people from these interviewees? How many get in?

God damn you people! Rubbing salt over wounds, eh? Seems like going to unknown school hurts.

Ha ha ha, Rishabh did hell of a job to revive the thread, it must hurt, right @betterthanbest?

@QuarkAssassin I heard last year most of the interviewees got in, but I really cant say. However, the 2 of my friends whom I was pretty sure will get Harvard got the interview, so it is definitely not random. I have mine in 5 minutes hope it goes well.

@BetterThanBest My school and even Amity is more or less unknown in the US. I am the first one to get an ivy from my school ever…

@peepingtom it’s rishab*

@betterthanbest : Don’t worry. I’m sure we’ll all end up at places where we deserve to be. Let’s just wait in patience for decision day!
