MIT: Master Interview Thread

How did you find out the interview was waived? From the EC himself, and not from MyMIT?

From the EC.
here is his response:

Location is ridiculous distance of . Sorry, just not a lot of us MIT types east of *. So it goes. Interview NOT necessary, especially if YOU are sure MIT is where you wish to go. Any questions, please feel free to call me at *

So should S forward this response to MIT? And if so, how?

How long usually it takes for the EC to submit his/her report?

I don't think there's a standard timeline -- I'm sure it's different for each EC depending on what else s/he has going on in his or her life at the time. But the ECs know when MIT needs them to finish the reports, so they will be certain to submit them in time.

And theorymom, I would strongly assume that the EC will report the distance problem to MIT, but you're certainly welcome to contact them yourselves to make sure the information was relayed, and perhaps to double-check that there are no other ECs in your area.

Does he e-mail them at the admissions address? Or would it be better if he called?

question: what's the latest date we can set our interview on?

i know we have to schedule by the 10th, but i honestly don't want to do an interview any time soon. is it possible to contact my interviewer and schedule it for sometime in late Jan/Feb???

^mine was scheduled pretty late for EA (conducted 11/11 when deadline was 10/20). it could probably done later for RD, but for the convenience of the EC, you should probalby schedule it sooner (my EC had to "expediate" my report)

I think either email or calling would be fine, although calling does provide the advantage of knowing that your issue has been resolved right away.

It will be up to your EC, but I think generally they are encouraged to conduct the interviews as close to the application submission deadline as possible. At any rate, all application materials have to be in by early February, so I suspect that late January will be cutting it too close. Early January might be okay.

You can certainly ask your EC for the latest date he/she can schedule an interview.

Lol that sounds like it would be slightly awkward.
EC: When do you wnat to schedule this?
You: As late as you can possibly schedule.

Nope, you are looking at a December interview.

Indeed, this is the first year that there was not a deadline for the interview to be conducted (for example, last year it was a 1 December date to schedule it and a 15 December date to hold the interview). The interview reports must be received by the Admissions office from the EC's by 6 January in order to be considered. It usually takes me 3-4 hours to write up an interview report so while it is theoretically possible to do it the first week of January, in practice every EC I know schedules all their last interviews to finish in December.

If there are real extenuating circumstances, and reasons why the interview cannot be held until February, then you can talk to the admissions office, but I would not be all that hopeful. The interview report needs to be in the folder for the start of reading, and that starts fairly early in January. If you are an international applicant (whose folders are read after the domestic pool) then there MIGHT, just MIGHT, be a little bit more give. However you should plan on a December interview.

Son's interview was waived due to distance (about 3 hours) What is son required to do at this point to notify MIT. Should he forward the e-mail to admissions? How does he make sure admissions knows the interview was waived by the EC?

[/quote]

ABSOLUTELY. Waived means something very special in MIT Admissions parlance and an EC has no right to waive an interview without the consent of the admissions office. Definitely contact the admissions office and let them know what happened. I would call them or e-mail Kim Hunter in the admissions office.

This varies hugely based on the EC and what else is going on in their life at the time. I have submitted reports within a couple of days of the interview, or a couple of months, depending on the year and my circumstances. If you had the interview several weeks ago and there is no report received, you may contact the admissions office to let them know that the interview was conducted even though no report has been received. There is a special flag for that situation in the admissions process.

Any advice or possible questions to think about before hand?

what do you like about MIT?
what are your passions? prepare to talk about that in relation to ur ECs

remember to be yourself :) have a good time!

static75 speaks truth. that is all.

Ok, so Matt McGann said the interview is important because EC's ask essentially what MIT wants to know about the student.

Could an experienced MIT alumni or past interviewee (is that a word?) list the questions that MIT wants to ask about the student? and popular questions asked by EC's in general?

"How do your classmates view you?"
"Do you consider yourself an entrepreneur?"

I remember those two from my interview. Can't remember the others.

There's no list -- ECs are free to ask whatever they want to ask.

what are you supposed to say when they tell you, what adjectives describe your personality?

I mean the first things that pop into my head are like passionate and dedicated. But I mean....isn't that everyone?

I'm stuck on this one. help?
