Rec's: 3 recommendations from faculty members in ME who are in my intended field of study (Thermal Sciences), and can speak to my intellectual capability and research potential. One is an MIT grad (in my field).

GRE Scores: I have not taken it yet, but assume that I will receive a near 800Q score and an above average Verbal.

I would like to attend MIT for an MS in the thermal sciences. What do you think my chances are?

Bout 3.50%

I will say your chance is around 20-40% depending on how strong your recommendations are.

I am a current MIT undergraduate with a GPA of 4.7/5.0 and good research experiences. But I still didn’t meet the requirement for Early Application (This is for MIT seniors only) because the admission officer has announced the cutoff be to 4.8/5.0. Although I could still send in my application early, from what I have discussed with the admission officer, my chance is still lower than applicants who not only have good research experiences but also better academic performance.

Keep in mind that many MechE undergraduates at MIT tend to apply here for graduate school and from what I have heard the GPA of these students are typically around 4.5-5.0.

MIT is highly selective, as the previous posters have noted, so you need to hedge your bets by applying to other programs which are strong in your area of interest. Ask your faculty mentors what other schools have good reputations in Thermal Sciences.

GPA is low. Everything else is ok.
