Of all my years on cc, I've never encountered a thread regarding men's volleyball at MIT, so here we go. I'm a junior that's been playing varsity volleyball in NYC (3rd year now, captain), and I'm wondering how good/competitive the MIT men's volleyball team is.

I definitely want to play if I get accepted to MIT, so how competitive are tryouts at MIT. Also, I'm not ideal volleyball height (a mere 5'10). Lastly, how popular is the men's volleyball team? are there tons of people that come to tryouts, or do just a couple of newbies try out? How can I possibly get "recruited" for volleyball?

I don’t know a huge amount about the men’s volleyball team in particular, but I would encourage you to send an to the coach expressing your interest. The coach will probably best be able to advise you about how your abilities might compare with the team and will be able to “recruit” you (you will get an additional piece of paper in your application stating that you’re wanted by a coach. this is not by any means a guarantee of getting in but it’s just one more thing in your application in your favor).

Good luck! On a side note, MIT is a fantastic place to be an athlete! :)

There’s a “Recruit Me” button on the MIT Athletics website.

MIT volleyball is D-III (there are very few D-I men’s teams), but currently ranked #10 in the country. They also have a club team, if varsity is too big a time commitment.

Hopefully you will be a future teammate of my son, a junior from LI with MIT aspirations. He’s a 6-4 middle blocker, so probably not competing for the same roster spot.
