Probably good-great recs

Family income < 50,000 also

I'm assuming that you're Korean. If that's the case, unless you cured cancer, there is absolutely no way you'll get admitted.

MITES is a program for minorities. A vast majority of participants are African America, Latino, Native American, etc. There are a couple of none minorities now and then, but you need some superb stats just to even be considered.

anyone else agree with that statement or disagree?
isnt that a slight exaggeration?

i agree with friedrice...

Although, I believe Asians are considered to be minorities...just not underrepresented minorities.

so it's a no go?
so it's a no go?
It's never completely a no, and you'll never know unless you apply, so don't give up. Like friedrice originally said, there are some non-URMs that are still admitted.

I'm applying to MITES too, it's interesting to see some of the competition. :)

I went to MITES. I'm an african american, but being Korean does NOT disqualify you. You stand just as good of a chance at getting in as everyone else. There were plenty of Asians there. Your stats look good. But if you get in, be ready because MITES is most definitely not for the weak.

Unrealated question: Travel soccer counts as an ec?

Hey, i'm applying to MITES too, but i don't have that much credentials or stuff as pmlee has. There was not much opportunities around here. I'm asian too, but of Chinese heritage. Looks like u have better chance of getting in, but i'm going to try to apply anyway.

PSAT: CR:72 Math: 76 W: 65

Took AP/Honors math and science classes, even American history too. (my school don't offer that much APs/Honors)

EC: JCC member (jewish community center), writer for the school newspaper, spring track sprinter, president and founder of my high schoo's first book club. You may notice a lack of science and math activities here, because my school don't have math and science club, and there is no such thing in my local area. So i had no such opportunity to do join one. However, it doesn't mean i didn't study math and science on my own. Rather, i spent a lot of time studying those subjects. How do i explain that to MITES ppl?

Work: part-time medical clerk in a local medical office

great recs.

Even asian ppl are well-represented in colleges and a minority, but how many people who are deaf and hearing impaired like me apply to MITES or got in? i don't use sign language, i can hear and speak almost as well as anybody else- about 80% of the normal hearing.

Does being deaf counts?

not only that, my dad had an docorate in physics, but i've only lived with him for three years. So does that counts as having a family member who have math and science background, even it's for a short time?

Also, my dad and i don't have money. We are supported by a woman, but she do not have an obligation to pay for my college or extra eduation.

@PShap91

i went to MITES this past summer and listed travel soccer as a ec...actually its the main ec that i do...

Wow. I applied to MITES this year but my credentials aren't nearly as good.

And I'm Taiwanese. Taiwanese doesn't count as a minority group, does it?

I need to start planning other things for my summer...

I find it surprising that there is no central discussion about MITES, I mean come on it is definitely better than TASP, LEAD, SSP, or RSI. ;)

Anyways just finished my application on Feb. 1st deadline! Yes, I'm a chronic procrastinator. MITES sounds like a cool program and I hope I get admitted.

If you look at the profiles you will see that a majority of participants go to MIT. The rest go to Harvard or Stanford! MITES can take you places!

http://web.mit.edu/mites/www/alumni_central/yearbook_home.html

So let's talk about MITES.

Who applied this year?

What are your stats?

How were your essays?

Good luck to all!

P.S. Post in this thread on decision outcome in April!

Hey. I noticed the same thing. I procrastinated too. I wrote two essays jan. 31 and the other two feb. 1 :) I hope I get in too. It seems awesome. My stats are really bad so I won't post them, but I want to talk about MITES. I personally think my essays were pretty good, but I didn't have anyone review them so I don't know for sure. I wish there were more people on cc who have gone to mites. I still have some questions. If you get in, what courses do you want to take?

You get placed depending on what you have already studied. For me, I would take Calculus, Biochemistry, Physics II, and Humanities. As for electives, I would like to do Internet programing and genomics.

That big question is if this counts as high school credit...

ok. so do kids have to do placement tests or just based on coursework.

According to their website, you still have to do placement tests.

Pmlee1,

I hope you applied regardless to what anyone here says. A good amount of people that post on this forum are just nervous high school wrecks that try to shoot down other people as a means to lower applicant pools... or thats how it looks to me.

woah,,, i applied too and i am azn,, haha i guess that just shows MIT that asians are not minorities in engineering.

oh well, hopefully some of us will get in,

i applied... but seems like its hard to get in...
