oh,, crap
then that means i didn;t get in haha
because my school does offer ap classes and i have taken 7 already,,.
i guess i am headed to socorrow hah

rosee09 can you please post your basic stats because just like yyoon if they base it on that then im screwwed as well.

hey , im gonna be in the junior fly in as well. i just answered a private mesage, here are my stats again.

dont compare to you, so far ive had problems in all my testing moments.
only PSAT scores i got are from my sophomore year,
660 in math, and high 500 in reading (shoot me in the face). SAT i got 650 in math (i missed 7 problems in first section, i thought it was a lot longer), and 540 in reading (no excuse, planning on leveling it up by at least 100 points). So far i have 4 AP credits, 2 5s, 1 4, and 1 3 in Env. Science which truly had to be a 5, I have no idea how i got a 3. Im in Science Honor, Environmental club, future builders of america, JETS (2nd place JV, 1st place V, and arguably thanks to me). Im in rigorous engineering magnet program in the hardest track, ive taken statics and dynamics and next year ill be taking it for college credits at FIU D.E. during school hours. ive done community service at library, cancer rallies, recycling, club bussinesses, removing exotic plants and helping maintain special endangered biomes here in insert my city here. Im in Varsity Track and Field (truly, im just average, but its good for the colleges). GPA unweighed i think its 3.73 , and weighted its 4.79. I dont really compare to you in my opinion, and sadly I dont think ill see u in FSU. if u dont get accepted into MITES (which im preetty sure you will ), you might go to the junior fly in, ill see you there. let me think what else. Oh, i was valedictorian of my middle school (doesnt matter), and i was the most prominent engineer of a program in Miami at FIU for engineering minorities, in the summers of 6 7 and 8 grade. i go to , a C school, 7th in my whole class, you? i just looked in wikipedia and it looks really hard to get in, specially b/c of my PSAT /SAT scores, but u got em down, so ull get in

Wait a minute...

"MITES is supposed to be an experience for people who wouldn't otherwise be exposed to a rigorous courseload"?
That's not fair! I thought that one's academic excellence as a minority is what determines who gets into MITES.

"an experience for people who wouldn't otherwise be exposed to a rigorous courseload"?
If this is true, then how can the accepted applicants possibly survive the super intense courses at MITES?

According to their website:

MIT MITES Program

Additional factors that are considered for selection as plus factors (not entry requirements) include whether:

the individual would be the first in the family to attend college;

there is an absence in the individual's family of science and engineering backgrounds;

the individual's high school has historically sent less than 50% of its graduates to 4-year colleges;

the applicant attends a school that presents challenges for success at an urban elite university (e.g., rural or predominantly minority); and/or

the individual is a member of a group that is under-represented in the study and fields of science and engineering (African American, Latino or Native American).

Members of all races and ethnicities are considered. We look particularly for students who come from challenging backgrounds and those who must overcome significant odds to pursue their dreams of becoming an engineer or scientist.

No where it mentions about taking rigorous classes...

Also,

The lady said that I didn't get in because MITES is supposed to be an experience for people who wouldn't otherwise be exposed to a rigorous courseload, and that they thought I wouldn't benefit from it.
[/quote]

Really?

From what I've heard from MITES Alumni, roughly half the attendees already had significant achievements and took the most rigorous classes while the other half is supposedly "developmental" students with significantly lower stats.

hmmmm...this is interesting....I might get in b/c my stats isn't good as yours or have done much. I also haven't take any APs testing yet though I'm taking 3 Aps this year....I'm not only Asian, but also a disabled. PSAT score is 99%, but not for semifinalist status, i think.
I really don't know!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I guess we just have to wait until all of us get calls, or decision letters and then make guesses as to what they were thinking through the selection process.

Rosee, what city are you from? Although I'm from Kentucky, I'm from the second largest city and a pretty well ranked HS(24th in the state). But the city only has like 300,000 people, which is small compared to the much larger cities. The local university isn't bad either(ranked around 300 in the nation) and it does have plenty of opportunities. So I really don't know if I would be considered to live in a place without much access to opportunities(maybe compared to other states and larger city this is so, but to what extent?).
I just hope that I don't get a phonecall at all.... What is MITES really looking for? Because people from really disavantaged places most of the time can't handle the rigorous courses that MITES have, only people with slightly more opportunities at home can handle it. Is taking too much AP courses a bad thing then? If that shows how much rigor that you have at school.
But what does a rigorous curriculum imply?

I am from the midwest. ok so brief stat overview. first of all, just for reference, i am the one who the people said i "wouldn't benefit from the program" (bs in my opinion).

ok
GPA: my school has a weirdish system so I'll skip this for now.
PSAT: 224 (W:73 M:80 CR:71)
AP Scores so far:
Calc BC in 9th grade:4
Calc AB Subscore in 9th grade: 5
Physics B: 4
US History:4
AP's to take this year: Both Physics C, Stats, English lit, Latin-vergil and then self-study Environmental science
umm... relevant background information.
I did calculus 1 in 8th grade at my local university, and then AP calculus BC in 9th grade. I doubled up on sciences last year, and did Accelerated Chemistry and Accelerated physics in a year. I'm currently enrolled in both my private high school and the local university. I would say that my high school is probably the best in the state, with about 20ish going to ivy's out of 130 and everyone (100%) going to college.
ECs:
I play violin and have for the past 13 years, and am concertmaster of the university orchestra. I am doing a violin major at the university.
I have done stem cell research for the past 2 years at this university for 10ish hours/week during the school year and 40 hours/week over the summer.
I am next year's captain of the robotics team, which competes in first robotics.
I am also captain of the math team.
Anything else that would help?

oh crap.. mites respond soon pleaseeeee
haha thnis is the letteri got from sSP

You,

Its understandable that you would like to wait to see what all your options are, then decide. But we have our own timeline and cant wait for every other program to which you may have applied.

I will hold your spot for another week, until April 15. Ask the other programs to give you a decision by then.

Regards,
Richard Bowdon

whoa rosee, thats some awesome stats. AP calculus in the eight grade? You were taking courses at the university since then? I can sorta see what MITES meant, but still you would definitely benefit from the program, I guess they really are looking for people with a lot less access to these resources. Although my stats aren't that far off compared to yours...

This has made me wonder, suppose that a URM from a really poor neighborhood who goes to a really bad school applies for MITES, and he has fair grades(3.5 avg gpa or something) and no AP, some community involvement, no national competition awards, and a mentorship perhaps. And he is compared to someone with stats like Rosee. Is he going to get preference?
But from what I've heard, isn't half of MITES students really strong and the other half not so strong? Which population is those really strong students from? So does this mean that if I had a really terrible application(comparably to Rosee's and of course assuming that my school offers very little) then I have a better chance of getting in?

woow. that rosee already beat me by the time she finished middle school. shes gonna be very bored next year (even if she probably starts college or something)

Is anyone here from the West Coast???

I"m from various places. I've lived in the South, but moved to the east coast for the past years. I live in CT now.
lzhang, you've just almost described the person I am nearly. All of my applications materials are from my NJ high school b4 i moved to CT.
My NJ high school is, like 60, out of 300 in the state, but only sends one or two students to ives every year. I've taken one AP last year, but 3 this year and i will take the exams. GPA is 4.41. PSAT was 213 and SAT is 2160, with math the highest (760)
I have some community involvement in NJ, but no math or sci invovlment b/c there was no such opportuntities in my area. Really, there was no such opportuntities in NJ to get more invovled, but luckily, this CT area seems to have more for me to be invovled.
Because of my stats, I thought i might be rejected anyway b/c my stats isn't good as everybody else here.NOw, i'm kind of confused. Where do i fall in? Am i one of those "weak" ones, but shows promise? or just plain bad with absolute no chances at all?

geez......the whole admission thing is so warped and crapshoot....

ok, so i mixed up some information. my ap score for us history was actually a 3, and my psat score was actually 219 with a 75 on the math.

Oh friedrice i'm from California.

^
I'm from Washington...Maybe we'll get called today...

Maybe, but i'm guessing we would have been called by now considering it's past 7 over there.

I wonder how many of the applicants get called?
