MIT Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES)

yea I think that might be true. I was checking out one MITES facebook group and one thing they seemed to talk about was how much they hated the RSI group.

Let's face it:

MITES > RSI

Can some MITES alum check and see if my stats are good enough to qualify?
-taking/took 7 AP's so far(taking Calc 2 right now)
-all A's(not that this really helps)
-210 psat
-1st in university programming comp.
-1st regional TEAMs competition
-President of Beta Club
-Officer and Webmaster of Orchestra for performing for nursing homes
-Took part in a video game production
-Mentored under two professors at computer science and robotics
-currently works with a robot arm
-natl' french exam state winner
-spread awareness of organ donation in school and city
-theres some other things as well as other clubs i'm in that i'm leaving out cause i don't remember
-lives in Lexington, KY(its the second largest city in KY, but hey, its KY, and even Lex isn't big at all: 28000 approx pop)
-asian first gen
-<50000
i think in 2002, for my school the college attending rate at full time was 69%
Is there anything here that would help my chances? Is lexington rural enough to be considered rural?

^looks pretty good!^ what were your essays?

here they are:
-about the importance of my mentorship for programming and robotics as well as how and why i like the field
-event detailing how i learned the importance of leadership and how I took steps to improve my leadership skills
-my chinese identity and how i followed and broke away from the norm expectations
-my hopes for future career in developing new robotics technology to improve the world
does being from KY help curb my chances at all? I noticed that there was only 1 from KY in 2005 and 11 from Texas, is this just because more people know and apply to this program in Texas?

^^^ i agree with friedrice...MITEs>RSI any day lol

but to answer you question MJ582:

We did both live in the same place. We lived in Simmons Hall, and i think thats been the case for a while; the MITES kids have always lived with the RSI kids. Now about us not talking to them and about how much we hated RSI....simply put we HATED them yes but we didn't really mean in. We talked to each other a lot actually (well most of us); i mean your there with them for six weeks and most of you will end up at MIT as classmates. So yeah we did actually get along (as much as i hate to admit it). The talking about each other was more of a rivalry thing then anything else. Two top summer programs breathing down each others necks; we just want to be better then them, so we would put them down and talk smack and they'd talk smack back and we'd crash their wack parties and they'd kick us out and then invite us back in and we'd refuse and say we're to good for there parties and then throw our own and invite them lol (random..i know). But they're really actually kind of cool (at least the 4 or 5 that weren't socially awkward lol JK...more like 8 or 9 :-D). Some kids became really really really good friends with the RSI kids, some didn't but the point is we did talk to them. And lets face it they're all really smart. So when your sitting in the athena cluster at 4:30 AM working on a humanities paper while trying to study for a biochem test and they're right beside you working on their ridiculous research papers you guys kind of bond by cracking jokes about totally geeky stuff and help each other make it through the night. HOWEVER, when you get to MITES be prepared to join the battle and start talking smack about RSI lol.

wow, sounds really exciting and fun! Now I can't wait to see the results!

Once again thanks for an extremely detailed answer!!

Your welcome guys. I like to talk about MITES lol. Anything more questions just let me know :-D.

anyone one know the approx date that we get our replies from MITES? I know its April, but is it early or late April?

Uhh...they didn't specify...just wait for it don't get too excited!

thanks again! so how did mites help prepare you for college? (general i know)

^
MITES is a very strong hook. Past participants attended universities such as MIT (obviously), Harvard, and Stanford.

I applied too.. gosh it seems harder to get into than what i was told.
Well let's see my stats.
-Am taking/have taken: 5 AP classes, 5 Honor's classes, 2 Accelerated
-Latina
-1800 SAT (i know not too good right)
-4.2 GPA
-Class rank #4 out of 520
-Elementary School art Teacher
-MPV for track and field last year (I can do just about anything, i usually run high and low hurdles, and throw shot and discuss. I get placed into sprints and relay teams ever so often)
-6 Year MESA Participant - 35 medals so far, state finalist a couple times for the national engineering design competition - held office roles
-ScholarCatz with high honors three years in a row
-Student Leadership Forum, Sacramento, 2 years
-Upward Bound CSUMB 3 years
-Varsity Cheer
-Certified in Engine Repair, and Automotive Performace.
-17 community college courses ranging from CPR and first aid, to Calculus and Ethnic Studies
Idk i do a lot of stuff, i'm really involved in my community i've been a cabin leader for science camp, and helped bring back the old tradition of a homecoming parade w/themed floats to our town, among other things.
half our graduating class become fifth year seniors, and we don't have a high graduation rate.
Wow anything i missed.
I really want to get into this program, last summer a couple friends i and i went to the east coast to see ivy league's and we went to MIT, and i always a wanted to go there, but being actually there made me want to go there even more i'm totally in love, i soooo want to go back.

oh.. Unweighted GPA 4.0

am I sensing a Naruto fan?

oh no Sakura isn't from Naruto. It means Cherry Blossom in Japanese. It's what i go by when we host japanese Exchange students, it just makes it easier for them to address me at the beginning

Be wise, and drop anything even remotely Korean from your application.
If they suspect that you are Asian, it will make it massively harder for you to get in.
It is like the 1920's again, only instead of trying to keep Jews out, they are trying to keep the Asian-Americans out.

sakura, I'd say that you have a good chance of getting in.
As for bearpooh, its true that being asian(as I am) doesn't give me much advantage. But its not like the 1920's, its harder for asians because asians dominate in this field and tend to be really good students(only a generalization). But still, that doesn't mean that they aren't foreign and have a different culture. One of the MITES essay was about your culture and how it affects you. How could I leave the asian culture out? Not mention, they need your picture, your ID and school report(theres not way you can lie).
Also, ethnic bg isn't the only thing that they are looking for, theres plenty of other things that falls in my favor.

Are you a Naruto fan MJ582?

i think both you guys have a good shot at getting in...and there were some Asian ppl there last year....so don't worry to to much about it...i mean you can't change it lol
