MIT Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES)

did any asians apply

yea...there were asians that attended the program

are they considered minorities?

well, asians aren't exactly under-represented in the science field. But still, asians are minorities, although it might be harder to get in being an asian. But I really don't know, I'm an asian myself. From the pictures of previous years, I saw a few asians(3-4), but maybe its because many asians don't apply for MITES...I dunno

i was going to apply but i was told that im asian and i have have a pretty high income so i wasn't gonna get in, which was probably the truth haah

Its true that those attributes do not give u any significant advantages, but they aren't disadvantageous. But from your statement I think I've confirmed that many asians don't even apply to MITES. Maybe this might make it easier on those asians that applied?

Add me to the list! The end of March is fast approaching...nervous??

oh wow.. April is like just around the corner.
so far applied we have:
pmlee1
technol21
rosee09
wildchartermage
Ouraqt
Friedrice
yyoon
lzhang
sakura17
XiΞiX
refugee1217
MJ582
selpaso

The suspense is killing me!!!!!!!! hurry up MIT!!!

by now they should be done with the decisions and should be in the process of making the yearbook of all the people that is to come and preparing to contact the students. The very idea makes me nervous and in need of a reply!

really?? how do you know ,lzhang? that they're done now? u sure that they'll let ppl know by March 27th?? omg omg!!! this is killing me!!! i really hope i can get in.

Does anyone want to talk about their application/stats so that I can confirm for myself that I have no chance of getting in? ahh, I really want to get in, but I know my stats are awful.

eh, rosiee, mine also looks bad. not that many ECs. i know the feeling.

Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Double URM
Location: Disney Land
High School: Very Public
High School Type: sends no one to top universities

Academics:

GPA - Unweighted: 4.0
GPA - Weighted: 4.74
Class Rank: 1
Class Size: 500+

Scores:

ACT: 31
PSAT: not up to CC standards
SAT II Math Level 2 : 780 (retaking)
SAT II Biology E: 720 (retaking)
SAT II Math Level 1: 760

Class Schedule:
AP Biology
AP English Lang.
AP US History
Precalculus
Pre-AP Physics
French
Anatomy & Physiology

Self-Studying: Environmental Science, Statistics, Psychology (basically easy APs)

Extracurriculars:

Pretty much my EC’s are weak, not many leadership positions but I am involved in math and science things and I have communtiy service if that helps.

Essays:
Horrible :)

Recommendations:
Unremarkable but I didn't expect much.

so is there a possibility MIT would consider me?

wildchartermage, I don't know, its just a guess on my part, don't get too excited there.
XiΞiX, there are certainly quite a few good stats that would help you: your rank, your school, your AP classes, and your scores. But if you could elaborate on your extra-curriculars and tell me what URM means, then maybe I can say a bit more. Still, its not like I know anything, so don't take my words so seriously.

Honestly there is no need to retake a 780; save your money. I got in with a 760. If your going to take another test take like USH or Lit so that you can apply to other top schools that may require 3 SAT II's (ie Harvard of Princeton - both of which won't count math I and II). I don't even know why you decided to take both math I and II, but that was your choice. That being said your stats look good. But they mean nothing with "weak" ecs or a "horrible" essay. If they are truly like you said then umm your chances are slim. I can't tell if you are being serious or not but if you are I'd suggest writing good/passionate essays and working on your ecs. It seems that's what got a lot of people in this year...

Wait akybaky.. got people accepted into the MITES program or Universities in general?

o0 no i was talking about into MIT, but now that i think about it MITES as well. There were people last year (in my MITES class) with SAT scores in the mid 1600s out of 2400. So I'm guessing that their essays, ecs, and recs are what got them in. XiΞiX said his were weak so I was suggesting that he works on those things

lzhang,
URM = Under Represented Minority

I don't understand how one determines their essays or recs as "weak". I haven't even seen a few of my rec letters, which worries me, as I found a significant typo on one by the time it was too late. I'm sure it won't make much of a difference, though they'll probably question what the "Natural Honor Society" is as opposed to National Technical Honor Society.

Ironically, midterm exams next week should take my mind off being nervous about decisions.
