MIT MITES @2015

Hello guys,
I just recently made a College Confidential Account after reading some cool threads. I am interested, specifically, in starting a thread about the MIT's Minority Introduction To Engineering and Science Program that will take place this coming summer, 2015. Please join so we can talk about the application process and I would love it if people who attended last year( or any year before that) could provide some advice for this year's applicants. Here goes nothing... :D

Super hyped to apply! Does anybody have a general idea of the selectivity of this program O_o…? Like… What counts as “academically qualified” in regards to PSAT scores etc.?

Hi @Newdle from what I know about people who’ve applied in the past, good scores are usually in the 200s. I suppose you have to prove that you’ve challenged yourself, taken the hardest courses, etc. Plus, you also have to write some good essays

@Iamquiteloud‌
Hey, thanks for the reply :D! So… Around 200s should be fine? I’m not really worried about my course rigor, since I’ve literally had to beg my school to test out of my classes even (not trying to sound arrogant or anything >_<…), but essays are a bit iffy, haha.

Here’s the link for the website, if you wanna check it out: <a href=“MITES – MIT Introduction to Technology, Engineering and Science”>MITES – MIT Introduction to Technology, Engineering and Science; . I’m really glad you responded. I want some people to go through this with me. I believe the application opens sometime in November…

@Iamquiteloud‌
Haha, no problem XD! I’m too hyped for this!

Me too. I want this sooo bad

So is this like the official thread? Prospective Applicant here.

I don’t know what you mean by OFFICIAL @PoisonIvy20 , but seeing as how it’s the only thread on CC for the MITES Program this year, I’d say this is the thread to post in. We can all discuss this together.

I’m really excited for this program, especially seeing how most people who get in get into really amazing colleges. The only thing I’m worried about is that I’m kind of a boring person and I don’t have a lot to talk about in my essays. Oh well I’m just gonna apply and hope for the best. I heard this program gives you a lot of freedom to do stuff. Like they would allow you to exit your dorms at night and just roam around the neighborhood near MIT and buy stuff. In Upward Bound we dorm at a college but we get in trouble if we are out of our rooms at 10:00 or if we bring our phones :(

Nov 18 last year the application was released. I’m not 100% sure to assume the same for this year, but the date is fast approaching! I check the website like everydayyyy. lol , I am obsessed with this program and just every aspect of it (social, academic, etc.)

btw why is thread so dead? Looking at past years’ threads people were bustling with questions!!

@PoisonIvy20 the application does open November 18 this year. I on’t really know why this there is not buzzing. I was hoping it would, seeing as last year’s threads were so live. We wouldn’t even HAVE a thread unless someone else had started one. The only reason I started this one is because I read last year’s threads and people who ha gone to the program were giving advice and stuff, so I was oping for the same to happen in this thread. Doesn’t mezn we can’t be excited though!! I am soooo excited to apply.

Question for everybody reading this thread: which set of scores are you guys submitting for your application? I know you can choose between PSAT, SAT, and ACT.

Also, please post if you are applying to MITES this year!!!
Let’s liven up this thread!!!

@Iamquiteloud‌ sigh looks like its just us for now lol, I’m planning to submit only my PSAT as I will not have taken my SAT in time to get my scores back by the deadline. I’ll probably ask to see if they still want my scores when I get them after the deadline.

Hey guys! Ha I’ve actually been waiting for a thread for this year’s MITES applicants. I finally decided to make an acc & post. I’m kinda nervous about applying because my PSAT scores were awful. My ACT Plan scores were really good (my lowest percentile was 92%; I do not mean to come off as braggy!) BUT my school lost them…im not sure if there’s another way to retrieve them or not but I hope so. But, I did take the SAT last Saturday & scores should be back on the 25th. I had a dream that I got a 420 on the reading section…Jesus. I don’t tend to do good on the reading sections. Hopefully I did alright though. But I’m really hoping I could get those ACT Plan scores. I apologize for any typos because I’m using my phone right now! Excited to hear more from you guys!

Also, what classes are you guys taking right now? I’m in APUSH, APES (online class which is the ultimate struggle), Honors Calculus, a class called Media Criticism where we basically “think outside the box”, and then I take Eng 111 and American Government at my local community college. I’m always interested in seeing what other classes people in the same grade as me are taking because my school system is weird!

Also, what are you guys’ extracurriculars? I only have 2. Cake club (I love baking and food :)) and Yearbook Club.

Planning on using my PSAT scores when I get them in December, this program isnt too strict on test scores, most scores are usually in the 60’s for each section. I think essays are a big factor in acceptance. Also being a minority obviously helps, I don’t think many non minorites are accepted. I’m glad I’m hispanic. It’s not totally closed of to non minorities but only a few get in every year. I’m really hoping my essays turn out really good.

Being a minority definitely helps in this program! I’m African American and 1/4 Native American (I never usually mention that haha) I hope you did well on your PSATs btw! I completely forgot that I took it this year, I only considered last year’s PSAT.
