MIT MITES Summer 2014

I took the PSAT in September or maybe October for school. How would I get my scores? I probably did very poorly because I had no prep since our school didn’t stress it what so ever. I’ve taken practice ACTs And gotten in the 30s so should I take the ACT in December since I don’t know my PSAT score?

@orangemaple-
I had no plans to apply to MIT before I actually attended E2(not even when I got in XD) and fell in love. It just wasn’t really on my radar. I applied for the experience and the awesome people/community. But if you want to go to MIT it’s really hard to think of a better way than to go to MITES. The acceptance rate for MITES to MIT is around 80%, and I heard it is 46% for E2ers, but that’s debatable. Anyways, as long as it’s better than 8.2% I’m good. XD

@Ginnymills-The deadline is in January and you will receive PSAT scores in early December, so lots of time to send them. If you have ACTs that will come out better then it would be a good idea to take and send those scores!

Oh this is awk…

Wait why D;

From what you guys have described I am really interested in attending.

Everyone apply! Best summer ever! App opens in three days.

Has anyone participated in MOSTEC?

Right now I don’t think there are MOSTEC people answering questions but as the date gets closer they might jump in and talk a little about their experience. You can read more about MOSTEC on its website: [MOSTEC - MIT Online Science, Technology, & Engineering Community](<a href=“MITES – MIT Introduction to Technology, Engineering and Science”>MITES – MIT Introduction to Technology, Engineering and Science)

When you are accepted people usually make facebook pages where you can talk with other attendees and alums and get all your questions about the program answered before you decide to attend. I don’t think there is anyone who regretted participating.

Are filipinos considered minority? The application isn’t out yet, so I don’t know if I can specify it so that the selection committee will not see me as just Asian.

Filipino-> Asian. I believe you can specify.

When is the application deadline, usually? My first semester grades will not be available until late January or early February, and the website says the app will be due in January without a specific day. I know I can just send my first quarter grades, but just wondering lol.

Thanks in advance!

Ok so I have two questions: 1) Can a Filipino put down their ethnicity as Pacific Islander? 2) Is it even worth me applying? I’m very average - average grades (A’s w/ a couple B’s), avg/low test scores, avg amount of extracurriculars (4 or 5), and avg letters of rec (probably a 6.5 out of 10)

1.) No. It is explicitly stated that Filipinos/Indonesians are Asian. Look up the definition on Wikipedia or US Census.

2.) Yes.

And MITES deadline was Jan. 24th this year.

How likely would it be for me to get into these programs:
-Fully hispanic
-Female
-Income lower than 50,000
-First generation, and also first for college
-Attended NJ SEEDS (another highly selective, 100 accepted out of thousands of applicants, program that helps low income families get into prestigious private schools)
-Currently attends a private school that is ranked 1st in NJ as the most academically challenging private school, and 5th in the nation (by the Washington Post)
-An IB Diploma candidate (college credit courses that are A LOT more rigorous than taking APs and is international)
-Have taken up to pre-calc last year (got an A) and currently taking IB Math, taking AB/BC calc next year
-Have already taken bio(A), chem(A), and physics(A), and currently taking the IB level of chem and doing IB level bio next year
-Went to Costa Rica with Rustic Pathways to build schools and teach english for a few weeks during summer of sophomore year
-Did NYLF program in Boston for medicine summer of freshman year
-also participate in several clubs at school, do community service at Foodbanks, and dance 2-3 hours a days almost everyday (because I compete)

I don’t have an exact set interest for engineering, but I know one of the electives for the MITES program is genomics, which is something I am extremely interested in. I also have really strong passions for both math and science.

and @amaranthineD: thanks for so much insight! You are being a huge help!

You soud typical of quite a few of the attendees so they definitely accept kidswith your background. It is extremely competitive for all three programs however. Write killer essays and good luck.

Wasn’t the application supposed to be out today?

It’s out now lol.

The new application and website are very snazzy looking…they’ve done a lot of work! XD Good luck everybody! I will help read essays and answer questions if anybody wants.

I have a question about the application: How do we know if we qualify for free or reduced lunch?

Also, do I have to give information for both my parents or just one?
