MIT MITES Summer 2014

PM them to me or some of the other alums on this forum if you want opinions. ;)

Are you guys applying to any other programs?

If I have an interest in art/literature should I mention it strongly or will that make it seem like I’m not cut out for a STEM program? My academic record is strongly science, but most of my awards have to do with art or english (aside from math comp.) and I’m teaching myself the ukulele.

Mention it strongly if you have a strong passion for it! I’m one of several E2/MITES’ers with an equally strong if not stronger passion for the humanities. It’s a LOT more common at MITES(and MIT in general!) than people think.

Everyone! Please, please, please don’t hesitate to write about what’s truly important to you, regardless of what you think MIT will want to see. Please don’t dig up some small relation you have to the STEM world and make it sound like it was the biggest impact on you. Write about what matters to you. That’s what’s most important.

^^^^^^^^Amen! Losagna, out of curiosity, how many non-minorities did MITES have this year? (Asian/White) XD

We had 3 asian americans (Chinese), and 3 white people. Well technically the white people had a little bit of something in them. One was half venezuelan, one was half native american, and the other was 1/4 mexican. Oh yea and we had one asian/oriental? from bangledesh.

I had a question, the only standardized test I took was a PSAT at the beginning of 10th grade, and I know if I take the SAT now my score would be so much better than before. I want to ask them if I can take the SAT in March and send them the score than, or should I just send them the 10th grade PSAT scores that I’m not satisfied with.

They won’t accept any scores past January, you’re gonna have to send in your PSAT scores if that’s all you have.

So if I’m taking the January 25th SAT, I can’t send it?

No, you cannot submit scores past the February 1st deadline.

In terms of sending scores to the program, do I have to send official ones? Or can I just photocopy my copy of the scores because my official score report will only arrive after the deadline…

Also, I know that it’s best to write about what you’re passionate about, but if I’m really into both debate and a science club, which one do you think would be more appealing?

A scanned paper copy of the official PSAT paper will suffice. And either one will be perfectly fine, write one for both and see which comes out better.

Hey guys! Question… for the teacher/guidance counselor recommendation, none of them are getting the email with the link to submit a recommendation. What do I do? Are any of you guys having similar issues?

MITES BLOG!

Alright kids!
The MITES blog is being updated, and in the next couple of weeks we’ll be adding plenty of stories and blogs from the 13ers - so if you are just as hungry for info about MITES as I was, check it out!

Is this only for minorities? I’m Asian, but I have a unique story…

@Hawkace Just apply. The program is not exclusive for minorities.

Also, should I submit my December SAT score if it’s lower than my PSAT score? I got in the low 2000s for my first try but I got a 211 on the PSAT.

It’s almost exclusively for minorities.

What’s the format for the essays?

I got a 144 on Psat should I say it on my application? (note: it optional)
