Hi there…
This probably might not be the usual “My chances of getting into MIT with low SAT scores” post that you see on CC.
Today the Dec SAT results came out. I got a 1260. It was my second attempt, I had given the Oct one and had got 1250.
That’s no improvement at all, no improvement after working day and night for about 3 months. I did my best, maybe it wasn’t enough… I’ve heard students prepare for a week and get 1500+.
P.S- Just to be sure, I’m talking about the 1600 point SAT.
I wanted to apply to MIT, which now surely is an impossible dream, but anyways, I have some stats to share…
My SAT scores : already mentioned.
TOEFL: 105/120
Academics : Disaster; except for Computers and English.
SAT Subjects: yet to give
And that’s it. I’m a disaster and I know it.
Now some more stats-
I’m 18 and I run my own company, Named Augustus. You can visit the website at - augustus.orgfree.com please keep in mind its a work in progress and not a complete site. Everything on the site has been coded. No Dreamweaver or similar software. Why that? Because I love coding, its my life. I’ve been using computers since I was 3. I know 7 languages in code, and speak 3 in social interactions.
I am the highest ranking member of my School’s robotic’s lab. I have 7 inventions to my name, well not “inventions” but small gadgets that I thought would be cool to play with. I have participated in the International Autonomous Robot Racing Competition organised by the University of Waterloo and won the second prize in the video competition (couldn’t go there because of last minute VISA problems). I have participated and won prizes in about 10-15 international/inter-school events in competitions of web designing, 3d modelling, video/photo editing, debating, robotics and I don’t remember some. Also participated in the National round of WRO, but lost the finals by 5 points. I also made a reboot of the game Gorilla using QBASIC when in 6th standard.
Also my recent grades in academics are like twice of what I have been getting before.
Going to MiT was my dream… and I just have lost it.
Shall I apply?
P.S- I have not read any articles on admission chances to MIT or whatsoever, I literally have no clue except for the fact that you do need a 1500+ to get your application on the admission committee’s table even.
You seem to be comfortable with data. Google any college’s “Common data set”. Go to section C7 and see the stats of admitted freshmen. You say you have “no clue”. Here you go.
You should use the SuperMatch tool on the left panel to see what US colleges might be willing to accept you. Good luck.
If applying to MIT is something you want to do, by all means do so. Do some research so you’re have realistic expectations, regardless of your academic profile.
As with applying to any competitive college, be sure to have your applications to all your safety schools in good shape.
@ManaManaWegi@bordertexan@jpm50 Well realistically thinking, its difficult, but I believe that I am the MiT "fit so if numbers really don’t matter that much (as said on mit admissions website) I might have a chance, a low one though, but a chance. I’ve even created a project report which covers everything that I’ve made so far, let me know if you guys have the time to review and would like to give your feedback on it.
Thanks for all your replies…
Everyone I was just wondering… I still have my SAT subjects with me… What if I can manage a good score on those… does that increase my chances of getting in?
The MIT admissions officers have written numerous blogs about everything related to applying to MIT. I recall there is even one blog titled ‘How to get in to MIT.’ I suggest you invest several hours reading them. Pay close attention to those written by Chris Petersen (MITChris).
The area on CC for ‘what are my chances’ (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/) has several pinned threads talking about the inherent problems with “chance me” threads. As you are learning, it’s easy for anyone on the internet to give you their opinion. Many of them are high school seniors who amazingly know more than the MIT admissions officers.
If you still want to get led astray with chance me input, then do yourself a favor by reading those pinned threads.
