MIT Short Essay Styles??

I was wondering, if you just HAVE to use a long dash--or italicized text to emphasize a phrase--what should you do in each case, respectively?
Do you put two hyphens for a long dash? And use CAPS to highlight something? (It seems a liiiittle unfair that MIT bloggers can italicize their texts in their entries but applicants can't in their app essays...)

Thanks in advance for your input!!

And what if you need to quote, say, a book or movie? It’s just a little incovenient when you can’t italicize things… =(

^ You shouldn’t need to emphasize a point with italics. Try to avoid the Caps Lock key. It’s also perfectly acceptable to use two hyphens as a dash.

You can refer to a book this way, without italics or underlining: In his recent book on writing, author Stephen King states that the best writing is clean, simple, and to the point. Better yet, delete the first six words in that sentence and just begin with “Stephen King states…”

You don’t have enough space to insert quotes from other authors. It isn’t necessary to cite references with a full book title.
