I was wondering if somebody could talk about the social life and personalities of the students. In no way am I a drinker, but I do like to hang out with friends and all and play basketball or soccer and I really don't care about most video games (sports/CoD are enjoyable) or science experiments. I know these are probably stereotypes, but are there a lot of chill guys and girls at MIT who aren't really big with the nerdy activities. I want to go to MIT, especially for a sport they have contacted me in and their great academics, but I don't want to kill my social life during my college years and talk about 25 year old milk. Also, would you say the student body as a whole (well...mostly the girls haha) is attractive (like cute)?
I visited the campus and the stereotypes were slightly broken, but I feel like the major it of the students fit them (but I really didn't get to know any so I hope I'm wrong). If someone could help and talk about the following points that would be a huge help! Thanks!

Personally, I’m extremely attractive. Other girls will have to speak for themselves, though.

Just come to CPW and see for yourself.

Go patriots! :D

I think I was in a fairly similar position when I was considering MIT. There was no question about the academic quality of the school but I was really afraid of what the student body would be like. I am also a varsity athlete and my fears were all dispelled once I came and spent a weekend with some team members. You say you’re also considering playing sports and that you didnt “get to know anyone,” I think trying to set up some overnight visit with a player on the team would be a really good option for you.

What you will see is that MIT is a really unique college experience. There are definitely people here that take advantage of the quirks and have a very non-traditional experience here. However, there is also a significant number (probably the majority) that tend towards a more traditional college experience, social life included! I can tell you first hand that MIT fraternities throw the best parties in Boston and the dorms can throw a pretty good party too. I usually don’t have more than one or two drinks in a night and I still have a lot of fun! I can also tell you from experience that your social life will definitely not suffer if you decide to do a sport on top of academics. If anything, having friends on the team from many parts of campus pushes me to go out more often, whether it be out to a party or watching a movie. If parties aren’t your scene, most students here are “chill” from what I’ve seen and always down to just hang out. Even when working, I will go out into my lounges to work with other people because I hate being alone in my room! So, theres a social aspect to work too for some people!

As for being an attractive campus, we probably wont win any overall best looking campus awards (lets be honest) but as an MIT girl, I’d like to think there are a fair number of us who are cute and attractive! Again, you will figure more of this out for yourself if you come for an overnight visit.

Good luck!

Are you coming to CPW? I strongly recommend going, and visiting as many dorms on campus as possible. Dorms have very distinct personalities, some more nerdy than others. There are plenty of people here who aren’t super nerdy, who do the normal partying or the normal sports stuff. There are people who roleplay every weekend and go to nerdy parties. There are people who mix and match. If you search around, you’ll probably find something for you :)

One of the things I love about MIT is that you’re free to choose the living group, and thereby the social experience, that appeals most to you. You’re not stuck in a random room in a random dorm – you select the dorm (and/or fraternity, sorority, or independent living group) that you think is the most fun.

As you will hopefully see at CPW, there’s a huge variety of living groups and social experiences available. You get to choose your own adventure.

EDIT: And as far as attractiveness goes, I like to say that, no matter how hot you think you are, there’s always going to be somebody at MIT who is way, way out of your league.

Alright thanks everyone! I’m currently a junior so I won’t be checking out dorms just yet (But if I do go I think I’m leaning towards Baker). It is good to here that there are good parties and fun, laid back people though.
