I intend to play varsity sports at MIT. Do I have to submit the MIT varsity athletics form ?

It definitely wouldn’t hurt. This is part of the FAQ on varsity athletics at MIT:

“Once I feel that you are a player who will be a strong contributor to our program, I will support your admissions file (although this does not guarantee admission to MIT). This entails writing a letter of support on your behalf to the admissions office once you start the application process and a file is created under your name over at the admissions office. You and I will also keep in touch throughout the admissions process. The admissions office can give me information regarding what may enhance your particular application, and I can give that information to you.”

It takes like 5 minutes too, might as well lol.

Is there athletic scholarship money available??

What about merit scholarship money?

No, to both of your questions. There is only standard financial aid.

I said that I was interested in playing varsity soccer on the form, and I emailed the coach to try to show some interest but he didn’t email me back. Will this be a negative factor when they review my application that I’m not recruited and the coach doesn’t know me? Any feedback on this would be helpful! Thanks!

As a fellow recruit my advice is as follows.

You’re really late in the game, although MIT doesn’t guarantee admissions based on athletics, they do recruit. I have been in contact with the coach I’m interested in for almost 2 years. I do not think the coach not emailing you back will be harmful, but don’t expect it to help you. He hasn’t seen you okay not has he gotten to know you. So I think it is neutral

*play not okay

No. Keep in mind that the coaches are not consulted about every applicant who lists an interest in playing their sport, nor are they in the room when the admissions office is reading applications and making decisions. The coach’s influence is limited to sending a list of recruits to the admissions office. But if you indicate an interest in playing the sport but aren’t on the list of recruits, the admissions office doesn’t know whether the coach doesn’t know you, or knows you and thinks you’re bad at your sport, or whatever. They just don’t designate you as an athletic recruit, no speculations made.

Ok thank you so much! This relieves me at least a little before decisions come out

So a coach emailed me and gave me extra forms to fill out and asked me for details about my extracurriculars and stuff and made sure I was applying EA but never said she was “supporting me”. Is this normal? Will this help my app?
