MIT vs. Yale

Obviously I’m biased, but I think I might be able to offer some good insight. My suitemate had to make the decision between MIT and Yale last spring and we’ve talked a lot about what influenced his decision.

First off, growing up, MIT was always his number one. He applied EA, was accepted and was content. His parents however, being asian, made him apply to Harvard and Yale just to see. He ended up getting into Yale with a full ride while MIT only provided him half that. Despite this, he was still really excited about MIT and not so much about Yale.

While his parents didn’t force him any way, they “strongly emphasized” that it was going to be difficult funding an MIT education. He ultimately chose Yale and is now one of my best friends (yay for me that he didn’t go there).

Anyway, a year later he feels that while he like Yale a lot, he would have gotten a better quantitative education at MIT. He really thinks he’s missed out on being a part of a technically-inclined student population and I think he’ll always wonder “what if”.

My advice to you is know what you’re getting yourself into before you decide to come to Yale. I’m going to be honest and say WE ARE NOT MIT. If you want to do pre-med, fine (our pure sciences - bio, chem, and physics are great!) but if you’re looking to do pre-med with ambitions of biomedical engineering or something, you should really know that it’s not Yale’s strength at this time, although they’re really working on it for the future (tonnsssss of money).

EDIT: I found the thread my suitemate made on CC last year. Maybe it’ll help :)

No, this is what I mean – over the past few years, it’s become increasingly common (for premeds, as is my understanding) to take courses like organic and stats at Harvard during the school year, then get credit toward their course 7 or course 9 requirements for doing so. So the option is certainly there for MIT premeds.

I’ll assume “Harvard Med” here is a stand-in for “a really great med school”, because, no matter where you go to school, it’s going to be really, really hard to get into HMS. You will have a great shot at MIT – there are lots of MIT alums at HMS, particularly in the Health Sciences and Technology (HST) MD program – but what’s most important is that you go somewhere you will be happy, and where you can take advantage of the resources offered to you.

I could also offer up both an MIT alum and a Yale alum who are current HMS students, because I have one of each working in my lab with me. :)

Hm…I think this is a new policy. I don’t think that happened in the 90’s.

thanks for the input, y’all!

any more general comments?
