Is it possible for anyone to be notified before May 1 / does MIT ask people early if they are still interested in MIT or do only some schools do that?
https://mitadmissions.org/pages/wait-list-faq/
And no, those accepted have until May 1st (inclusive) to decide whether they want to commit to MIT.
And since ~75% of those accepted will go on to commit (it was about 76% last year), you won’t be notified until the second week of May.
I can tell you that as of about last week, 877 have already committed, so that number will go up.
Hi @agapetos thank you so much for the reply! I greatly appreciate it. I assume you are affiliated with MIT / the admissions process?
Would you project that given those stats, MIT may take students from the waitlist this year? Thank you so much
I am on the Educational Council (I am an interviewer). I am not on the Admissions Committee.
I don’t know, and I generally like to be factual rather than speculative.
I would reiterate what MIT Admissions has written –
Don’t count on being admitted off the waitlist.
“You should accept the offer of admission from another college before May 1, even if it means making a deposit.”
“…focus on choosing the college with the best fit from those who have offered you admission. Wait lists are uncertain, so it’s always best to ensure your happiness no matter what the outcome.”
Last year, the “Class of 2022 Wait List” blog post was made on May 8, 2018 – “Following May 1, we take about a week to determine the state of the incoming class, and to assess how many, if any, students we will admit from our wait list.”
So that’s when I would expect an announcement – 2nd week of May – next week.
If you are on the waitlist, I wouldn’t get your hopes up very high – mentally and emotionally. I would seek out other options that are an excellent fit. Then whatever happens will be great. It will be gravy if there are some admitted off the waitlist but you will be fine either way.
agapetos, how does the 877 number compare to past years at a similar time?
thank you for being very straightforward though.
No clue. I don’t track those stats. And the number of commits went up and I expect them to go up one more time on Monday/Tuesday.
Just chill for a few days, you’ll find out.
Hi @agapetos thank you for the reply. I’m just a little confused—how come you expect them to go up one more time on Monday/Tuesday if the deadline already passed?
Is it worth sending an additional, short update if I just received a few state academic medals? Ex: 2nd in biology?
Uh, yes, the count went up a little bit as “there’s some lag between decision and data entry” (or data transfer) as you may imagine. It’s not instantaneous when someone pays their deposit/makes their comMITment and that information being available. (For MIT alumni: all people who commit do appear in the MIT Alumni Database under Class year = 2023.)
Updates, well, I don’t think these will matter at this point, but you can always check in with the official admissions people.
Hang tight. We’ll all find out very soon.
On the positive side, there are a number of people that I had been speculating that they would be coming to MIT and I think I was right on a few of them. I’ll just say:
One guy was USPT, IPhO 2018, gold medalist;
One guy was PRIMES and RSI;
One guy was the IOI 2018 absolute winner.
One guy was an IChO 2018 gold medalist.
The rest of the guys on Team USA for the International Mathematical Olympiad who aren’t Class of 2022 are Class of 2023. (Both were also Regeneron STS Finalists, top 40)
10 additional Regeneron STS Finalists as of January 2019.
Wonder if Jack Nugent (LANBros) will apply next year.
AND:
You should be proud of your achievements.
Pursue what you really enjoy regardless of whether (or not) you are admitted or where you end up.
anyone get any news yet?
Nope, @bella246 , you? AHhhhhhhhhh the uncertainty is killing me
@agapetos Thank you so much for posting. And wow, those people are amazing. Do you think people will know soon? /when maybe?
@vc_scrubjay unfortunately not… : ( I’m really happy with the school I committed to, but the what if’s are killing me
I low key just want to get this rejection over with so I can stop fantasizing about an acceptance haha
@bella246 OMG same! Mood for every of the above sentences XD Augh the agony
May I ask where you’ve committed to?
@vc_scrubjay UMich, you?
@bella246 I’ve committed to Duke
augh i keep checking the MIT blogs many times a day, I’m so pathetic XD
Omg this waiting is killing me, I’ve also been checking the blogs nonstop
Bonus points for writing your own script (e.g., using curl and grep), or using a free solution like Visualping or ChangeTower… that way you don’t have to constantly ‘pull.’
Visualping or ChangeTower I believe can email you if something changes on the mitadmissions.org site/blog.
These are the waitlist announcement dates in the past few years and number of students admitted from waitlist:
Class of 2022 May 8 0
Class of 2021 May10 14
Class of 2020 May 11 26
Class of 2019 N/A 52
Class of 2018 May 15 28
Late announcement may not necessarily be bad thing… Noticed some waitlist actions going on at Y. H, and S this week.
