MIT waitlist of 2024

My daughter is waitlisted at MIT.
What are the chances this year? Is there anyone else waitlisted at MIT and heard anything?

Waitlisted here too. There’s a chance that yield this year could be affected by the current pandemic, but no telling whether MIT has already compensated for this or if it will actually increase waitlist acceptances.

I’ve heard that all of them come out the same day, last year around May 10th? So will just be sitting tight until then.

@vivid203 The acceptance rate increased this year with MIT. This could be for compensating the pandemic effect. Yes, let’s sit tight and see what happens. My daughter really want to go there, it is her dream.

Interestingly enough, there were over a thousand more applicants to the class of 2023 than there were this year. The number of students admitted did increase though.
It seems they did acceptances with a projected 75.5% yield, down from 78% last year… but 2022 had similar numbers so I hesitate to say it’s significant deviation from trend. It’s all speculation, anyways.
Good luck all !

I was waitlisted as well! Does anyone know when they’re going to release those results? Is it going to be next week sometime or should I expect them sooner?

MIT had a “record yield” this year, according to their virtual town hall meeting Tuesday evening.

They will not make a decision about what fall term will look like (how many students can return to campus) until the last possible moment (likely early July.)

There was no mention about when '24 students would have to request a deferral by, nor talk about the waitlist; the town hall was to discuss MIT’s response to the current covid-19 crisis “Solve for Fall.”

I doubt there will be wait list movement. They are over-enrolled by about 40-50 students. Even with gap years will be fine.

@am9799 How do you know that they are over-enrolled?

@4729562 They said so yesterday in the town meeting. Also alums can see the 2024 numbers.

@am9799 Thanks for letting me know! I guess that means my college application/decision process is finally over.

I watched the townhall but there was no mention of ‘record high’ yield at all. In fact, there was no discussion or mention about admission decisions.

I watched again and yes they did mention ‘record high’ yield but last year was also over-enrolled, yet 17 out of 408 people got off the waitlist. So, who knows! Don’t give up hope yet.

They just sent an email saying that they’ll push the notification date later into the summer. Any guesses on when that might be exactly?

No clue. Have they ever done this before?

My guess is that they are full but because of covid 19 they are keeping the wait list in case they have lots of deferrals/gap years OR internationals not able to travel. It could be as far as mid July or later. However, it has to be before fall tuition is due because it is one thing to loose deposit to another college and entirely another thing to loose fall tuition (unless of course someone has a full ride).

They just postponed waitlist decisions to “summer” via email:

Dear [name]:

We hope you and your family are well and staying safe. Now that our enrollment deadline has passed, we are reaching out with an update on where we are in our process and to thank you for your patience while remaining on MIT’s wait list. Unfortunately, due to the uncertainty around COVID-19, it is still unclear whether we will be able to admit any students off the wait list, so we are asking you to wait a bit longer. We know that waiting for a decision is tough, especially at a time like this, but we simply don’t have enough information at this time to know whether we will have space to admit any more students this year.

We plan to be in touch with you later this summer, once MIT solidifies its plans for the fall semester. We don’t know when that will be yet, so in the meantime, if you haven’t already done so, you should enroll at another college/university (even if it means making a deposit).

If you no longer wish to remain on the wait list, please fill out this form to indicate that you wish to withdraw your application. While we hope you’ll remain on the wait list, we completely understand if you no longer wish to do so.

Otherwise, there is nothing more that you need to do right now, except to take care of yourself and your loved ones. Thanks again for your patience as we work through these challenging and uncertain times.

Sincerely,
MIT Admissions

Do you think we should submit final senior year grades to them for the waitlist? Would they even want to see those?

What is the percentage of admitted students from the accepted pool this year?

Um well according to their article it’s like 7.3%.
https://thetech.com/2020/03/29/admissions-statistics-2024

We (MIT Education Council members / a.k.a. interviewers) got an email,
Yield was 79% this year, a record;
I can see from the Alumni Directory that Class of 2024 has 1157 members. A few people deferred/delayed entry (“took a traditional gap year”).

*Dear EC,

We hope you and your family are safe and well. We’re writing with a couple of quick updates:

Class of 2024
Over the past few weeks, we’ve been anxiously waiting to hear from our admitted students on whether or not they will be joining our community. So we are excited to report that we had the highest yield ever with over 79% of admitted students enrolling in the class! Due to the uncertainty around COVID-19 and the plan for the fall semester, it is still unclear whether we will be able to admit any students off the wait list. We have asked the students to wait a big longer and will update them later this summer when we have more information.*

I don’t think wait list results will truly be finalized until later this summer.
