MIT/Wharton/Stern/Carroll

Hey guys

I am a rising high school senior interested in applying to undergraduate business schools in the fall.

Getting into MIT or UPENN Wharton would be my top choices, but obviously those are reaches for the majority of students. Still, I was wondering if I was even in the ballpark of contention.

Also, would I be able to consider schools like NYU Stern and BC Carroll as matches?

Here are some stats: (feel free to ask for more information if needed)

SAT Reasoning: Math- 800, CR- 730, Writing- 800 (2330, Single-sitting)
SAT Subject Tests: Math Level 2- 800, Chemistry- 800, would have to send a 620 Biology-M to Penn, plan on taking Lit 700+

Unweighted GPA: I think around a 3.7 right now
Weighted GPA: 4.02 right now

I have only taken 2 AP's so far, Statistics & Chemistry - 5s on both
Taking AP Lit, Comp Sci, BC Calc, & Spanish senior year.

2 time International-qualifier for DECA (business club)
1st & 2nd Place DECA awards at States
Officer & Training Coordinator of DECA at school
Founding Member of school Investment Club (Wharton investment challenge competitor)
Varsity Tennis Captain (3 years of varsity)

9 years of violin (multiple group performances)
150+ hours volunteering at hospital
Independent Autism Fundraising Venture ($1000+)

Tech Fellow for Cambridge City Councilor's campaign
Internship at tech firm (coordinate class on Big Data)
Dual Enrollment Java Programming @ local community college
Partner of Google through an iPhone tutorial Youtube Channel (10,000 subscribers, 5 million video views, few thousand dollars total revenue)

(Middle School: Grand Prize @ Regional Science Fair, Climate Science award, Raytheon math scholarship)

Hoping all my rec's will be great (English, Chemistry, counselor, supplemental from Cambridge politician)
Going to try to make my essays stellar.

Biggest concerns: only 2 AP scores to send (logistically could only take 3 w/ my schedule), 3 B+'s sophomore year, no high school science/math awards, only 3 leadership positions in school

That's all I can think of now. Feel free to be brutally honest (but constructive as to what is lacking)
Here is the list if you would care to comment on any others:
MIT, Wharton, Stern, Carroll, Ross Preferred Admission, Georgetown, Northeastern, UMASS Amherst
Thanks in advance!

MIT Sloan: Reach
UPenn Wharton: Reach
NYU Stern: Match
BC Carroll: Match
UMI Ross: High match (OOS)/Match (in-state)
Georgetown McDonough: Reach
NEU D’Amore-McKim: Low match
UMass Amherst Isenberg: Safety

Your test scores and ec’s are strong, but the issue is your GPA. If you have an upwards trend or can get straight A’s the first semester of your senior year it’ll boost your chances tremendously

Acceptance rate wise:

MIT: 7%
Wharton: 10%
Stern: 15%
Carroll: 25-28%
Ross: Not sure
GTown MSB: 16-17%

Hello: there are several other students like you who are looking for undergrad business. Do a search and look at their profiles as well.

Positives:

 • High SAT scores
 • High GPA
 • DECA involvement seems solid (and relevant to your future major)

Negatives:

 • class rigor questionable. Only 2 APs by senior year? Need to explain why you couldn’t take more. If this is a scheduling issue then why didn’t you show more initiative by self-studying for APs?
 • Leave out the middle school awards, they won’t care
 • ORM status
 • How well do you know the Cambridge politician who will be writing your recc? If only superficially suggest to leave this out
