MITES 2011 Information & Discussion

MPiccolo: I live in california, so when it’s 5:30 here, it’s 8:30 in Ma. When I get home, it’s already 3:00, so that’s 6:00 there and I think they close by that time D:

chowaznmein: why not just call when you get up at your normal time. Also, I think if you have an emergency deadline to meet it’s better to email the mites address as it goes to more people and bogs down the office less.

do they email u or mail you?

Notifications were sent by United States Postal Service.

showas have u gotten anything?

So have they made the application status page available?

Still nothing from MITES… and I live relatively close to MA… but got into WTP, so I’ll be spending the summer at MIT regardless of my MITES status!
To everyone else:
Relax. Whatever’s meant to be will happen. Having experienced the horridness that is waiting, all I have to say is that when the decision gets to you is the time to laugh, cry (or both), but worrying won’t change anything!
Still, I totally understand what you’re going through (I went through it myself until getting accepted somewhere… finally!)… so if you do feel the need to worry, that’s okay too.
Just be true to yourselves, no matter what.

FYI, desertscholar lives in a state (Nevada) that has never had a MITES candidate. Plus, he is definitely low income, a valedictorian candidate at his high school, a multiple award wining student, an athlete, a member of the NSBE Jr. Chapter, and a class president. Decent SAT scores to boot. However, many of you on this forum are just as outstanding as my cousin, so keep your heads up! Many of you will still end up at MIT (an Ivy League school, Stanford, or Caltech) in 2012. Believe that! You guys are awesome!

Nevada has had students in MITES before, but I’m glad for him.

Cool, MPiccolo! I did not know that! It was my understanding that no one from Nevada has ever attended MITES. I do know that students from Nevada have attended MIT.

It should be an amazing experience even if it isn’t MITES because it is still from MIT. I live in Miami

BTW, MPiccolo, are you a native Nevadan?

There was a girl from Las Vegas in MITES 06.

rejected from WTP…
praying on MITES…

dascholar: I am not.

Congrats Edeleon004! Did you contact CPUscientist3000? She got into E2 also.

It’s disappointing to understand that you were potentially not accepted to a program solely based on economic reasons, demographic, or race. What our world has come to.
Oh well, good luck to those admitted, hope you have a nice summer.

(I am probably just a bit sour that I was rejected)

Edeleon004, CONGRATS :)

Can’t wait to meet you at E2 :)

(thanks dascholar btw)

EDIT: being denied from MITES means that you have successfully utilized the tools available to you. Remember, MITES is for students at a disadvantage (but everyone is still an amazing student!)

I’m sorry you weren’t informed of that, ratiocinator.

I know I have not been a part of this thread, but I wanted to let y’all know that I received my acceptance letter in the mail today! I am from Houston, TX, btw!

I knew going into it that I was at an immediate disadvantage because I’m not directly a student at a disadvantage. I thought I had a slight chance that I would get in just because where I am from there isn’t much opportunity in science or math and I try to do everything that I can. But, I am still happy that several CC’ers got in and I hope they have a great time this summer. I wish there were programs like this that were free as well and not solely for students at a disadvantage. I still have the Governer’s School for a week on full scholarship which should be fun.
