MITES 2011 Information & Discussion

Amorvida- you’re completely wrong. It’s not to boost my application. I wouldn’t put myself under such mental duress when almost no one who goes to MIT actually went to MITES. we all want to go to MIT and become some sort of engineer/scientist/etc. But we all know that so we’re talking about other advantages of having MITES. What do you mean no one fits the MITES target?

I’m not trying to argue your intentions at all, but I was getting from some statements like “with this on your college app, any school would be crazy to deny someone” that a main element of MITES to you is how it makes you look on a college app. And by target I mean URM, low income, etc.

When I said that I wasn’t referring to just because its an MIT program. I meant it as in, since it IS an MIT program you know it’s rigorous, and anyone accepted to that program is well over good enough for any school. I apologize if it came out the wrong way. But I don’t get your last part? I thought we’re all URMs here… And although some people have mentioned 80k to over 100k incomes, I am low income. What my moms statement says and what she actually takes home after taxes are two totally different things. And I don’t mean to sound rude in any way.

I just think that this is a really cool program that’ll help me decide between a few different schools. If I learn that I like engineering after this program, then it drastically changes my choice of school. For example, if I decide I don’t want to be an engineer, my second choice of major would be vocal performance/opera.
As to being URM, low income, etc, my parents can’t afford to send me to a good engineering summer program (usually $4000+) and if I don’t get in, I’d rather work this summer. Also, as to not being URM, I can’t help my ethnicity, can I?
But yeah. Good luck, everyone!

Nocturnalduck… I don’t have a back up major =x computer science needs to work out for me. I know I don’t want to be an engineer though. Who knows, maybe I will.

i’m a minority! and sure i’m not the paragon that mites is looking for–my school sends a lot of people to ivies and i wouldn’t be the first in my family to go to college–but like i said that doesn’t mean i have $5000 just sitting around to spend on another summer program. of course i want to go to mites for the learning and the being with other nerds and all that, why else would i spend my time applying? i’m just saying that there’s not necessarily anything really outstanding that i’ve done, so i’d need mites to get into my dream schools. (and to have the best summer ever doing smart things with smart people :])

@CPUscientist3000 Maybe MITES might change your mind and make you want to become an engineer :P

I want to become an electrical engineer, a chemical engineer, or work in the nanotechnology field. (blargh that sentence had faulty parrallelism >.<) Maybe none of those, also. MITES is more of a way for me to decide whether I will like becoming one of those or maybe getting a different major…

I agree with Jamaican…!
And chow- that’s what I expect will happen lol when I’m forced to do engineer like things. I wish they had a computer programming course selection :stuck_out_tongue:
I just really want to go. Honestly HS is boring-easy. I want a challenge.

^^can i get a like button? for the last three sentences.

^ Same here? :P

For the PSAT score report, is it the Student Copy of the Score Report Plus that I send in?
For the SAT score report, is it the Student score report (black and white) that I send in?

I have the week off next week, so I won’t be able to give my score reports to my counselor and scan them…:(

Doesn’t matter i don’t think. I had my real one tho

guyzzzz. like no joke i’m freaking out TWO MONTHS before we find out. this is awful. what’s gonna happen come april? ahh. let’s all be best friends (: my name’s kyra and i’m a silly smartypants (: (alliteration hehe)

I’m freaking out because all my stuff hasn’t been sent in rahhhh.

Regarding chances : I kinda regret applying because theres like a 0.0001% chance I’ll get in.

 1. my math gardes/ sat math scores suck.
 2. I’m asian but my nationality is not typically well represented in engineering or science

I really really want to get in and that’s gonna make rejection even worse…

But I mean idk…
My luck is horrible.

Ahhhh sorry to be a Debbie Downer :(

We all feel that way^
But it would kill me to not apply.
On my ten schools I’m applying to list, MIT, Yale, cmu, RPI, and Barnard are the “hardest” ones to get into. But I like them and i’m still applying.

i highly doubt i’ll get in which is gonna be super sad cause i’m excited to go ):

Positive thinking.

well they’re looking for low income, underprivileged students basically, right? i’m not rich but i’m not living in poverty either, and i have opportunities that others don’t because of where i live (like taking calc III next year for free with fifteen other kids from my school through a local college)

so my thinking isn’t too positive, woohoo(:

Usually, with these programs, they look for two types of applicants. Extremely well qualified students that might not necessarily be a URM or low income. Or low income URM with so-so scores. But i have seen many in the middle that have been accepted to the program, since apparently MITES doesn’t always take the overqualified students. I am sure that your Calc III at the local college will only make you look better, it shows that you have taken extra steps outside of school.
