Aww guys:(

CPUscientist3000, does the book Zeno’s Paradoxes contain the ideas such as the arrow paradox about how the arrow will never hit the target because blablabalbalbla,

because in philosophy class, we explored zeno’s paradoxes one day
it’s so enthralling.

and yes CPUscientist3000, I did apply.

again, GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! YOU ARE ALL GENIUSES :)

Don’t fret everyone, MITES accepts people of all diversities

And I say that because on their homepage it states:

“In 1975, the SOE launched the Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES) Program to address the low numbers of minority students pursuing advanced technical degrees. Now the MITES Program is a rigorous six-week residential, academic enrichment summer program for talented high school students who are interested in studying and exploring careers in science and engineering.”

It presents the fact that MITES USED to be solely for minority students, but is NOW for all academically talented students “who are interested in studying and exploring careers in science and engineering”.

yay diversity :)

Lightyears26 yes it does, I love it!! I just can’t understand two of them :/

And the thing about MITES… it would defeat the purpose if they accepted people from all ethnicities considering it’s MINORITY introduction to…I always forget… Technology, engineering, and sciences?

Not saying that I don’t want people to get in, but I think they should “rank” ethnicities. Like having Caucasians at the bottom, but also still considering lifestyle situations (I don’t want anyone taking this the wrong way).

Lightyear they should change the name then. False advertisement is illegal XD

They had to change it for legal reasons.

As presented in The Tech (MIT’s newspaper)'s article from 2003:

“One area that remains unsettled is the multitude of minority-oriented programs such as MIT’s Minority Introduction to Engineering, Entrepreneurship and Science Program, or MITES. The program came under fire earlier this year when two groups, the Center for Equal Opportunity and the American Civil Rights Institute, filed a complaint with the Department of Education charging discrimination in MITES admissions. Prior to this year, MITES admitted only underrepresented minorities, except in unusual circumstances.”

Then what about things like NAACP, UNCF women is science and engineering, Jewish student Programs, or various other Programs that are for a certain kind of people only? They should be sued/done away with too.

Typo oops
UNCF, women in ***

I don’t know hmmm
I also don’t know where I personally stand on this debate, because I believe in pure equality between everyone because I believe everyone shares an equal potential in this world.
But I am also aware that many people are still turned down from opportunities due to their ethnicity/gender/religion.
Overall I just want everyone to have an equal chance at anything their heart yearns for.

I agree with LightYears.
If a person really really wants to do something, then there should be nothing to prevent that individual from doing so, especially something to do with his/her birth =)

@cw484912 Sorry for getting to you so late. I was at science olympiad competition. Naw…at least not in comparison to my fellow Chinese friends. I’m considered like average.

Academically, I’m the average/below-average Chinese student. D:

^
LOL same here =)
i feel so un-asian whenever i write math contests =(

I think a lot of my Chinese friends are just naturally good at math and don’t necessarily have a genuine interest in mathematics. I, on the other hand, have a genuine interest and aspire to pursue a career that involves mathematics. :D

I know an Asian guy (well he’s half but oh well) that gets made fun of sometimes because he’s not “smart”
But I also know another Asian who acts like he’s better than everyone because he’s Asian. And I said, well if you were, why aren’t you valedictorian ? (: he’s not even too six, I moved up ranks above him(:

I hate when people assume that I only get things because I’m black. But I hate how people put me on a pedestal because I’m “smart FOR ABLACK PERSON” (they always want to add that in, but never do XD)

Right now the top six at my school is made up of three boys(all white) and three girls (all minorities- black,Hispanic, and indian(Asian))

I’m not racist, but I do like to see minorities (females too) in the top of their class, because not many are (Hispanics & blacks I mean, but Asians too :D)

Top six** not too six oops

@CPUscientist3000 I’m with you there, even though I’m asian. People assume too much based on race. For example, when people found out that I didn’t get a perfect score on the SAT, they were like “OMG!!! You didn’t get a perfect score!!!” It’s soooooo annoying when people make a big deal out of it! My friend got a perfect score on the SAT and whenever he gets a problem incorrect on the test, people are like “OMG! Mr. 2400, I am seriously disappointed!” Either way, people always make a big deal out of it!

I wish there was a mid-year report for this MITES thing. :(

I wish everyone would just embrace their ethnicities throughout the world and just share and educate others about any cultural differences etc.
But yeah, one of the great things about this program being open to all different sorts of ethnicities, is that everyone can be exposed to many types of people with different backgrounds. Because honestly, there are too many high-schools out there that still discriminate against people due to what they were born as…(now i have lady gaga’s Born This Way song stuck in my head XD)
but ya :)

Yeah thats true! =) I really dont like the stereotypes that people have, because it really stresses me out. I feel that I HAVE to do well or else I’m going to be made fun of. =(

But stereotypes aren’t that big of an issue at my school. Like whenever a white/black person gets an award for math or science subject a lot of people say like “LOL the asians got owned” only because we are so used to seeing an asian student getting that award.

we say it just to be funny, and im pretty sure the people at my school say it in a teasing way =) and yeah i agree with CPU, i like seeing minorities getting awards that they don’t usually get.

@chowaznmein - i often have trouble perceiving topics involving really abstruse mathematics =(. I’m good at following rules and formulas, but if you ask me to prove something or come up with my own equation, then im helpless =p

OMG the new black eye peas song = GOD.

sorry for being on a tangent. or going on a tangent :S
