MITES 2013 Discussion

@moni my all time favorite book would have to be sherlock holmes, the whole (original) collection, just because of the language and writing style and plot. I also haven’t had a lot of time for reading recently GAHHH but i will try to find the Season of Passage, it sounds cool! @iuvenilisAnimus what piece are you playing now for violin?
it would be so awesome to meet you guys! can’t believe we have to wait till april >.<

I knew that you guys would be interesting 8D.

@Iuvenilis, you’re not boring; don’t worry =). What’s Cafe Rio?

@ice: I’ve neither read it nor seen any of the movies (except for the newest one), but I plan on reading them when I have the time :). At the moment, I want to finish Divergent and then tackle the LOTR series.

@moni OH MAI GOD I LOVE THE LORD OF THE RINGS!!! :smiley: :smiley: :smiley: i read the hobbit, and the first two books, and need to read the third, have you seen the movies?

I’m Filipino and basically, I want to become a patent lawyer, and more specifically, I want to major in mechanical engineering. It combines my three loves: the justice system, engineering, and business. I’m an IB student, and I really value my extracurriculars, but my most important one is FBLA (anyone else?!?). However, I do not play any sports, and I am not coordinated at all. Recently, I’ve really been into Ed Sheeran and Frank Ocean. I do like to read, but I haven’t come across any books that I can consider my favorite of all time. Any suggestions?

@ice: nope! I saw The Hobbit 2 or 3 times because it’s /fantastic/, but I haven’t seen the rest! I’m currently a few chapters into the book, and then I’m going to start on the actual series :). Sci-fi has never had a big role in my life, lol… Never seen Star Wars/trek, any of that stuff either. My group of friends has recently expanded, however, and I’m constantly getting eye-rolls for not being “cultured in the way of geek”, hahaha.

@lovely: What’s FBLA?

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who fails at sports… I can’t even walk the half mile to school without tripping over my self or nearly falling down/up the hill :P.

I want to go to MITES or RSI so badly… D:

MITES >>>>>>> RSI.
Just saying…

@icefairy, haha well I had to learn a piece in like three weeks so I’m doing Concerto in G Minor, third movement. I absolutely love all the movements in Concerto in G! What are you playing? :)

@lldm21 (Moni, right?) I just had Cafe Rio today! :stuck_out_tongue: It’s a restaurant that serves Mexican food, kind of like Costa Vida. Have you heard of that place? Oh, they’re both so delicious. They prepare the food while you’re in line, and sometimes they sing! :)

@lldm: its a school club/organization that focuses on the business world and different aspects in it. you just compete against other schools in the hopes that you can make it to nationals!

@lovelylistener

Hey hello another IB filipino student! I like Orson Scott Card books, especially “Ender’s Game.” It’s sci-fi, but not too much so. There’s also this book based on an NPR show, called “This I Believe” which is also good. I’m in the process of reading “The Idea Factory” which is about MIT and stuff, so that may be interesting if you’re looking into MIT. What genre’s do you like?

Anybody here in TSA? :)

MITES >> RSI? What makes you say that? It’s probably better for certain students. Personally, my #1 choice is RSI, but both programs seem like excellent programs for someone to attend.

@IuvenilisAnimus i’m playing paganini concerto #2 :)

@icefairy WOW if it’s the one I’m listening to, I love it!

Ahh, QuestBridge apps are available now. Who`s applying for that as well? O:

@run1116
Haha I have a little bit of bias b/c I did MITES, but it all depends on what you want to do this summer. RSI is more research based whereas MITES is more college based with problem sets and whatnot. Both are great programs and you will meet cool people, but there differences are notable.

P.S.
According to the alumni email I got, nearly 2000 applications were received this year. But no pressure. Right? :wink: Good luck.

I am applying for QuestBridge! :)

List so far of MITES 2013 applicant locations. I’m pretty sure that this is accurate, but maybe one or two might have been double counted.

1 Arizona
3 California
2 Colorado
2 Connecticut
3 Delaware
2 Florida
1 Illinois
1 Maryland
1 Michigan
1 Nebraska
3 New Jersey
4 New York
2 North Carolina
1 Ohio
1 Puerto Rico
4 Texas
1 Utah
1 Living Abroad

wow 2000 applications so 4% acceptance rate. Who knows they might open up more spots.

My name is David. I go to a good private school in Lincoln, Nebraska. I’m Vietnamese ( shout out to IuvenilisAnimus!), and I would love to go into Aeronautical Engineering or Engineering Physics. Really, anything that would help me get into NASA, my dream job. MIT is my top choice, but any good engineering school will do. My favorite book series is Artemis Fowl, an action and adventure series. I like to listen to pop/modern music, but nothing too auto-tuned or electronic. Today’s radio and pop music is really catchy, but is far from good. I do like the Youtube artists that cover modern songs, especially Micheal Henry and Justin Robinett, whom I highly suggest you guys checkout in your spare time. They’re really good! I want to get into MITES for the experience and as an unofficial MIT “college visit”. I’m involved in a lot of extra-curriculars and I was never good at sports.

@DangitDang How is MIT and how was your MITES experience? Can you tell us specifics about what it’s like to live at MIT and about how MITES affected you?
