MITES 2013 Discussion

Now that I think about it, I feel as if it would be almost as good to get into MOSTEC and a summer program elsewhere as it would be to get into just MITES… I’m hoping that at least one of those scenarios occurs.

I would be very happy to get into any of the three programs too, but if I get into MITES I will die from happiness :P

hopefully MITES or SSP… Otherwise Harvard Summer program from QB is my safety ><

Haha, my post was sarcastic. I’m Hispanic too by the way.

Now I’m doubting my chances since more than a few people on here are Hispanic. I thought the applicant pool would just be me versus a thousand Asians…

In order to reinstate my confidence, what type of Hispanics are you guys?

I’m Puerto Rican (Mexicans make up the bulk of the Hispanic applicants).

However, I am only first generation on my dad’s side.

Another thing I’d like to add…

I’m glad this thread is gaining popularity now that all the RSI rejects are coming over to root for their second choice, haha.

@Rivstein, actually if I was accepted to RSI…and MITES… I would’ve talk to aluminis and stuff before deciding. Probably bias towards RSI because I’ve never done intense research in my life but have done college lectures.

Hey guys! I applied to MITES but I really feel that I won’t get accepted. My PSAT score was a 153 and I have a GPA of 3.6/4.0, but I do fall under all 5 “plus factors”. I would like to know if I really do have a chance in getting accepted to this prestigious program. Should I get my hopes up?

This thread has been pretty active lately! I’ve been trying to keep away from anything related to MITES, but I couldn’t resist coming back. I always get depressed when I think about how low my chances are :(

Rivstein, that’s exactly what I thought! I knew the program was geared toward minorities, but I still thought that being African gave me an edge. I guess not.

Good Luck you guys! Only one more month of agony to go.

@RPAZ95 - While I wouldn’t give up hope just yet, know that a 153 isn’t exactly the ideal score. The plus categories are exactly that - plus categories. Not qualifying categories.
In the end, scores aren’t everything. Your essays will have to show a lot of scientific interest, as they would for any MITES applicant.

@RPAZ95
I agree with Hoctopi, however, I’d give the fact that you fall into all the “plus” categories a little bit more weight than the GPA and PSAT. Here’s my take…

Essays

Plus Categories

PSAT

GPA

@Sky360
I read somewhere that MIT considers all Africans minorities (regardless of color), so you’re all good bro.

I think it would be better if they gave us an actual date for decisions instead of late/mid whatever…

I’d be more at peace if I knew the actual date on which I will be extremely elated or mildly depressed, haha.

Are you guys first generation college?

Also, if you’re Hispanic, what country do you or does your family hail from?

Puerto Rican
1st Gen (dad’s side)
2nd Gen (mom’s side)

@Rivstein
I’m not Hispanic, but:
1st Gen dad’s side
3rd Gen mom’s side

I’m half black and half Asian. I hope my half-asian doesn’t rule me out, or serve as a major disadvantage. Also, I’m scared about my recs. I haven’t read them, but I have doubts. My counselor rec was probably horrible (she has a thick accent and cannot write very well, AND she doesn’t know me that well.) Also, the one teacher I would’ve loved to get a rec from could not write one, as they asked for a current math teacher, who I don’t know really well. I think my essays were good though. Hopefully, 1/2 asian and bad recs (for maybe two out of three, yikes) won’t kill me.

I hope being full Asian doesn’t kill me (>.<)

@Rivstein My parents are from Mexico. I’m 1st gen on my mom’s side, 2nd on my dad’s.

I hate that there’s no specific date, after the first week and a half of April I’m not gonna sleep :(

Speaking of plus categories… I don’t really fall into any of them (except minority) XD 2nd gen on both sides, I think, but I didn’t bother mentioning any of that in my essays or anything.
sigh This waiting-fest is absolutely killing me.

I’m not Hispanic…but first generation on both sides of my family. :slight_smile:
And wow. I haven’t posted in 10 pages! Gah, I just wanna know if I made it already. I received an email the other day and apparently I didn’t send in my test score reports…thank goodness they gave me another chance to do so! Hopefully that doesn’t hurt my chances.

I’m Hispanic. I came from Mexico to the U.S. when I was 6 years old.

I’m a first generation on both ends of the family. Honestly, the essays were not challenging, but I spent hours and hours writing them since really, being a first-generation female Mexican low-income immigrant in STEM is a tough thing… my essay about a personal challenge was the hardest to choose since, well… there were too many challenges :-/

I feel like a good fit for the program, but I always have so many doubts. My science teacher rec was very nice. My math one… it was positive, but rather generic. I hope my reader was able to capture my mood…

How did you guys get to read your teachers rec? Did they show it to you?

You have the right to view all your application materials, including your rec. However, you may waive your right to view your rec for whatever reasons. If you don’t waive your right, you can request a copy of them.

However, I think it’s better if you waive your right to view a rec. It shows a strong relationship between you and your recommender.

I waived it.

Did any of you not waive it?
