MITES 2016 Discussion

Hey future juniors and everyone considering applying for MITES, what’s up? Feel free to post stats on this thread or other info regarding MITES.

Haven’t taken standardized tests yet, but here are my stats.
GPA: 4.0
Class Rank: > 1%
AP: 4’s Bio/Euro
SAT II: 720 Math II, 760 Latin

Hey dsi, I signed up the first day the application was released. On that note, are there any MITES, MOSTEC, E2@MIT alumni around that want to share their experiences or give advice?

This person shared his/her experience.

Thanks for the link; it opened my eyes that there could be a negative experience at an MIT program. I hope I won’t be disappointed by my experience if I’m accepted to any of them. :s

DaAfrican those stats seem good
junior from texas right here.
Here are my stats:

GPA: 4.0
Weighted GPA (100 scale): 102.35
Class Rank: >1% (5/190 students)

About 500 hours of community service

I’ve never taking the SAT, but I am this weekend. Hope PSAT scores are good given that it’s a new one
Has anyone started the application?

Hey what’s up guys! I’m from ohio. I just submitted my application for MITES, and I’m super nervous of course. I still haven’t taken any standardized test but the PSAT, and I’m patiently waiting for the results. I’m taking the SAT January 23.
Here are some of my stats:

GPA: 3.98
Class Rank: 14/240 students
APs:Lang and Comp, Physics, Calculus (this year)
EC: Math Club (Secretary), Film Club (Co-Founder and VP), Model United Nations (Secretary) , American Field Service Club (VP), and Varsity Crew. I’m also class president, and have been for the past three years, and have done science olympiad but i included those in Honors and Awards. I volunteer at a kid’s club and my local hospital every week, and safety program for kindergarten kids over the summer. I started a small business where I fix phones.

Realllllly excited to hear from you guys!

I started my application and asked for all my recommendations. I’m going to do the essays during winter break. What about you guys?

Hey just a quick reminder for all MITES applicants: this program does not go out and accept all students with near-perfect grades and test scores. Nor does the program care about how many community service hours you have. This program is looking for intellectually curious individuals who wish to push their limits and who are open to change. Not to be a party pooper, but I would caution against posting all these stats on the page because it is broadcasting the wrong message. MITES is not some elite gentleman’s club where all the 2400 SAT testers go to socialize. If you are only applying for these reasons, then I would recommend finding another camp. As a MITES 2015 alum, I just don’t want people to get the wrong idea about such an amazing program.

Proud MITES 2015 alum here,
Listen to me very carefully
STATS ARE NOT EVERYTHING
while yes, this is MITES, a very selective summer program. I just wanted to make things very clear.

  1. Scores are not everything Yes, they could help you, having good scores won't hurt. In my experience meeting other MITES students, to this date I'm pretty sure I had the lowest SAT score. Guess what? That's okay, because they also care about who you are as a person.
  2. Stats are just numbers. While someone who has a 3.7 GPA compared to a 4, a 3.7 could be more appealing. Numbers mean nothing without context.

If I had focused on numbers so much then, I wouldn’t have applied. There are so many other places to make it up. For me, I felt that my essays and ecs made my application worthy of being accepted. Remember, this is particular to me.

Everyone is different.

That being said, the absolute worst the OOEP office can say is no to any of the programs. Apply! But don’t get so fixated on numbers of awards, but rather, focus on how to present yourself.

I wish you all luck, I will be hanging around this thread for any advice/tips/motivational speeches.
:heart::heart::heart:

HEY GUYS! XD

I’m another MITES 2015 Alum (Sensing a trend? You should)

I’m not gonna go into details about how much stats aren’t everything because I think my fellow beautiful Alum above covered it fairly well. Honestly, I’d say don’t even post em buuutt it’s a little late for that now don’t you think?

Anyway if there is anything that I learned from MITES is that essays matter the most, they portray who you are the best and give insight into your aspirations (something a few random numbers can’t do).

Another thing is that the experience is different for everyone (I saw the MOSTEC post) and there are people who don’t like it for varying personal reasons, but you shouldn’t let that discourage you because you’re not them. Since the program I’ve met quite a few MOSTEC and E2 students (through fly-ins (yea you should check those out too) and online groups) and they also really enjoyed the programs. So don’t get discouraged if you don’t get into the one that you want, or even if you don’t get in at all because it’s not a reflection of your possible admission decision.

So I probably won’t be around as much as Soram BUT if you want any pointers, suggestions, help, additional info on MITES (I’m not spoiling it though xP), or other programs to apply to hit me up I have random info laying around.

Peace out! Good Luck! And no unnecessary arguing about test scores! :3

Wow, three MITES alumni in a row, cool.
To the MITES alumni:
How were you all’s extra-curriculars before you applied? Because I have good test scores and a good gpa, and I can probably write good essays, but my extracurriculars are lacking. I’m also not low-income. Do kids like me get into MITES often?

Hey friends! I know MITES is for minority students. In this case, does the minority classification include Asians, or is it only Hispanics, Blacks, and Native Americans?

If I’m not Hispanic/Black/Native American, should I not bother applying since I won’t get in? Or do they still accept non-minority students?

@mufasa1 When they say minority they are talking about underrepresented minorities, so not Asians. However, that doesn’t mean that Asians can not get in. If you ask the alumni they’ll probably tell you that there were white and Asian kids there too. I’m not low income and I’m applying, so you should apply too!

what if you don’t have any SAT scores yet what do you do …?

@kewikewi28 Do you have any other standardized test scores? Like the PSAT or ACT? If not, you don’t need test scores, they’re just recommended.

I am both super excited and freaked out by this process!
I am trying to get it done during the break due to school and all that unnecessary stress!

@dsi411 I have test no scores at all , I was going to take it this spring, (didn’t really plan properly) so does this lessen my chance of getting in? Cause I really really want to do this program.
Also I dont have perfect stats, is that bad? Yeah and what if both parents have been to college but still dont make much ,am I still allowed to do it?

what if you didnt excel at math in the past grades

@kewikewi28 As long as you are a junior and a US citizen, you can apply and have a chance of getting in. I’m not sure if not being first-generation will lessen your chances, but I’m not first-generation and I’m applying, so you should too. And as for the test scores, I could’ve sworn it said that test scores aren’t needed but I found this in the FAQs:

So I’m not sure. And you don’t need perfect stats, the alumni have said that essays are most important.
