MITES MIT Summer Program - Any information? What kind of student gets accepted?

I am a current junior and I absolutely love engineering. I'm a pretty well-rounded student and I was just wondering if anybody knows what kind of student the program is looking for. Input from past attendees would be great! Thanks.

Good Grades/GPA
Not exclusively opened to minority but it really does help to be one
SAT Scores didn’t seem to matter much. Some had as low as 1700’s, while there also people with 2200+
Come a from a family with no engineering background/low income family
Great Essay/Great recommendation.

Hi crelihic,

I’m a alumni of the most recent class of E2@MIT students. By applying to MITES, you are also considered by E2 and MOSTEC.

If you love engineering, you should apply to MITES. Although you have a much better chance if you are a minority, first generation, or low income student, it’s not a requirement, as I was none of those.

Test scores are definitely not as important, as there were E2 students with SAT scores in the 1800s and low 20’s, but I would say that GPA, course rigor, and ECs were really good in all my peers.

My E2 class was a group of the most amazing people I had ever met who had overcome some incredible challenges. Many were first generation who had parents that never completed middle school and took complete charge of their education on their own, or had family difficulties, children of immigrants, or immigrants themselves. I specifically sought out my fellow E2’ers’ backgrounds and was blown away by what they shared about themselves.

They were all brilliant, collaborative, kind, friendly, and truly passionate about engineering. Try to get those aspects of yourself across in your application and you should have a much better chance.

What if you love science (bio, chem)/medicine. Will mites suit me if I’m not interested in engineering?

What is MITES?
I’m a high school junior, interested in STEM, and looking for some summer opportunities (internships, camps, etc).

MITES is a summer program at MIT that exposes student to engineering so you don’t need to have any engineering experience.
The actual program isn’t too engineered focused but catered to the general STEM Student (but you’ll also have to take a humanities class there!)
So if you’re interested in science and math then definitely look at applying to MITES.

If you guys have specific question about the program feel free to ask here.

@niceboat- Is the program specifically tailored to URMs or low income students? I am a URM, but not necessarily low income.

Sorry, what’s URM?

URM is underrepresented minority.

You don’t have to be either URM or low-income to get in, but it’s definitely helps tremendously to be both or one or the other at least.

The majority except maybe three or four? of the program were minority.
I obviously don’t know about people’s economic situation, but most (not all) of the students were also from poor inner-city areas (as I am).

There were definitely people at E2(which is more engineering focused than MITES) who were interested in the sciences/medicine. And I echo Niceboat in saying that although most were both URM and low income, there were people who were one or the other or neither.

don’t have too many engineering-ish related activities. pretty sure i got rejected b/c i was overqualified lol
