Hello, my child is of mixed-race who was born and raise in U.S. We’re researching for college info for next year. Are there still $ for race-based? Every $ counts as she will not qualify for need-base. Beyond the grades/SATs, I’m checking to see if there are opportunities also based on her race. She is mix Filipino, Chinese, and Caucasian. She identifies more as Filipino and Caucasian. I heard that Filipinos are viewed more like latinos instead of Asian (from college admission). I don’t know if there’s any truth to this. Any insight is appreciated.
We are a mixed-race family too and here’s my advice. Filipino is considered “asian” for college applications, so unfortunately there’s no real advantage to that. It’s true that within the asian community filipinos are underrepresented, but in the application process most schools would just see “asian”. It may help with colleges that do holistic admissions, but it’s not that cut and dry.
If I were you, I would try a few things. Look for scholarships that specifically mention filipino students and apply to all of them. They may only be for small amounts, but there’s probably less competition. Is your daughter first generation college student? That can help. The last thing I would check on is scholarships for asian women. You didn’t mention what major she is looking at. If it’s STEM there may be more opportunities as an asian woman.
My kids are caucasian, asian (filipino/japanese), and pacific islander. One of my sons was heavily recruited by a top 20 school. With his stats, he would have gotten in regardless, but I believe his race helped him get a really good scholarship.
Hope this helps! Good luck to your daughter!
