Anybody willing to share the scoop on the sororities at Mizzou? And by reps I didn't just mean "The Kappas are known as the anorexic girls who love to party." I meant things like info on the houses/best location/best parties, events, charities, etc/nicest, most studious, wildest, etc. girls...any insight really. I know I will be able to see for myself if I rush , but I would still like some info other than what can be gained from Mizzou's website or any individual sorority's website?

And I don't want this to become a shallow thread where people bash a sorority because the chapter's average BMI is to high...lol. Thanks!

Greek life at Mizzou is amazing and a great way to get involved with many different aspects of campus and some cool traditions that make our campus really great.

As someone in a sorority at Mizzou, I really would encourage you not to go seeking stereotypes of the various chapters here for a few main reasons. First and foremost is that many of the stereotypes associated with the chapters here are quite outdated and don’t really even hold any more. While some basic trends do continue, for the most part the chapters change a lot based purely on the character of the women going through recruitment that will make up the chapters. Next is that the sheer size of the chapters here allow for a huge array of talents and types of women in each chapter. What this means is that while one house may have the outdated reputation for being full of ugly bimbos you’re still likely to find quite a few women there that are drop dead gorgeous or are sporting a 4.0 after a few years here (which is no easy feat). I have friends in so many different chapters and the cool thing to me is to see how similar we all are despite which letters we wear.

Rather than looking for reputations and stereotypes, I’d encourage you to come to recruitment super informed so that you can really do your best to find where you match. Check out each chapter’s philanthropy and see if any support a cause you’re particularly passionate about. Do you have any cool talents? There are chapters that value sports pretty highly and typically attract athletes; there are chapters that consistently maintain the highest sorority GPA and attract lots of brainiacs; there are chapters that perform well in homecoming and greek week skits and dances and therefore like to find women that have a drama background; the list goes on. My best advice for recruitment is to be informed and to be yourself. You’re not doing anyone a favor if you try to fake something to fit into a house you think you want to be a part of. If you’re committed to sticking out the week of recruitment (which is pretty brutal both physically (it’s hot here in August!) and emotionally (especially when you get dropped from a house you thought you loved)) then you will find yourself in a chapter surrounded by amazing women you’re proud to call your sisters.

Joining a sorority and participating in greek life at Mizzou has been one of the best things I’ve done so far in college. It’s given me tons of new opportunities and some really close friends. I highly recommend it to anyone interested and would happily give you more information if you’re looking for it.

I can’t tell you which chapter I’m part of though–I was chosen to be a Pi Chi (more or less a camp counselor for a group of potential new members) and therefore “have to” disaffiliate for the summer :)

go greek!
Kristin

Thanks for the advice!
